Columbia Uses Long Ball, Strong Pitching to Down Phoenix, 5-1

KINGSPORT, Tenn.--The Phoenix's bats were stifled by Columbia College in the NAIA Opening Round opener at Hunter Wright Field in a 5-1 loss. The Phoenix will take on Louisiana Christian in an elimination game later today.

Owen Clark was the story of the game for Columbia. Clark threw seven innings in the win shutting down the Cumberland offense. He gave up just five hits and one run while striking out 11 batters along the way. Hunter Hees threw the final two innings of scoreless baseball.

The Cougars took advantage of an early error by Cumberland and then had two big home runs as the game progressed to get the win. Braden McGinnis went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the sixth. Zac Fruend added two hits with a solo home run and Dylan Carlton had a two-RBI single in the first.

Cumberland picked up just six hits all game as Toshiki Kuriya and Gaines Haussin each picked up two in the game. Trenton Duchscherer and Preston Welchel each have collected a hit a piece.

Justin Goldstein (7-5) suffered the loss throwing 6.1 innings pitched. He gave up five runs, three earned, on five hits. Jake Green threw the final 2.2 without allowing a run.

The Cougars struck first in the top of the first inning scoring two for an early lead. Bailey Quint led off the game with a single up the middle and Tyler Renn reached on an error as CU tried to turn two up the middle. Goldstein got the next two batters, but Dylan Carlton delivered a two-out, two RBI single through the right side for the early lead.

Toshi Kuirya led off the second inning with a double down the line and scored two batters later as Gaines Haussin singled him home to cut the deficit in half through two innings, 2-1.

In the fourth, Zac Fruend launched a solo home run to left field to push the Cougars lead to 3-1.

Columbia extended the lead in the sixth inning, Renn reached on a hit by pitch and the AMC Player of the Year Braden McGinnis hit a two-run homer to left for a four run cushion, 5-1.

The Phoenix got out of jam in the seventh as the Cougars had two runners on, but a strike out, throw them out double play ended the threat to keep the score at 5-1.

The Cougars threatened again in the top of the eighth, but after a 45 minute lightning delay, Cumberland got out of it. Dylan LaRue threw out a runner at the plate to end the inning.

The rain delay finally chased Columbia starter Owen Clark. The Cougars turned to freshman closer Hunter Hees to get it down. Hees walked Javy Beal to leadoff the inning and later walked Preston Welchel with two outs, but Hees stranded Beal at third with a groundout to end the frame.

Cumberland has one last chance in the ninth and put two runners on, but could not get any across to fall 5-1 in the opener.

The Phoenix will now fall to the loser's bracket and will have to win five games to get to Lewiston. Cumberland will take on Louisiana Christian later today in an elimination game. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. central time.
