Phoenix Dominate in Elimination Game, Shut Out Louisiana Christian 10-0

KINGSPORT, Tenn.--Cumberland Baseball kept its season alive in emphatic fashion Tuesday night, blanking Louisiana Christian 10-0 in an NAIA Opening Round elimination game at Hunter Wright Stadium. With the win, the Phoenix (38-17-1) advance to face Indiana Tech tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. CT.

Right-hander Carter Rost was lights out on the mound, tossing a complete game shutout while allowing just three hits and striking out 14 Wildcats to improve to 10-0 on the year. The complete game was the first of his career in a Phoenix uniform as well as 14 strikeouts being a new career-high for the senior.

Cumberland seniors led the charge with the bats as the Phoenix totaled 13 hits in the game and played solid defense behind Rost. Preston Welchel went 3-for-5 with two home runs and double while driving in four runs. Trenton Duchscherer added three hits and two RBIs and Toshiki Kuriya and Gaines Haussin each had two hit ball games.

Cumberland jumped out early with three runs in the first inning. The Phoenix put two on with two outs before Kuriya drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single. Next batter, Dylan LaRue then hit a fly ball into the outfield and the Wildcats had a costly error that allowed two more runs to cross.

Preston Welchel extended the lead with a solo home run in the third for a 4-0 lead. Duchscherer hit an RBI-single to push the lead to 5-0 in the fourth. Welchel came back up in the fifth and delivered a two-run moonshot to right to really seal the deal.

Cumberland put the nail in the coffin in the ninth as the Phoenix tacked on three more runs. Welchel drove in one on an RBI double, Kuriya hit a sacrifice fly, and Haussin singled home a run for the 10-0 win.

The Phoenix advance to an elimination game tomorrow with Indiana Tech. The Warriors won their first game against Louisiana Christian before being shut down by 1-seed Tennessee Wesleyan in today's game.

Cumberland and Indiana Tech played twice earlier this season, splitting the two games. The Warriors won game one 8-3 and Cumberland bounced back in game two for a 4-1 win.

Tomorrow's matchup is slated for 12:30 p.m. central time, with the winner advancing in the Kingsport Bracket of the Opening Round.
