MOBILE, Ala.--For the first time since 2019, Cumberland men's tennis earned a victory in the NAIA National Tournament, taking down 21-seed Huntington University 4-2 in the opening round Tuesday afternoon at the Mobile Tennis Center.

The 12th-seeded Phoenix started strong by securing the doubles point. Daniel Wessels and Paul-Daniel Meyer dominated on court three with a 6-2 win. The Foresters picked up a win at No. 2 as Pablo Lopez Real and Martin Capdevilla defeated Elisey Kalashnikov and Gabriel Godoy 6-3 to level it. Julian Parada and Vitor Ferreira clinched the point with a tough tiebreaking 7-5 victory at No. 1 doubles.

In singles play, the Foresters picked up a win at No. 3 to tie the match at 1-1. Gabriel Godoy delivered a win for the Phoenix with a 6-4, 6-3 score at No. 5 singles to give the Phoenix the lead once again.

Paul-Daniel Meyer followed with a clutch three-set win on court four, outlasting Pablo Lopez Real 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

Daniel Wessels gave the Phoenix the win in a grueling three-set match at No. 1. He defeated Andres Jimenez in a three-plus hour match, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 for the team win.

The victory propels Cumberland into the second round, where they will face 5-seed Southeastern at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams met earlier this season in Lakeland, Fla., with Southeastern taking a 5-2 decision.

Cumberland looks to avenge that March loss and continue its postseason run into the quarterfinals tomorrow.
