Cumberland Women's Soccer Takes Care of Business Against the Bulldogs

LEBANON, Tenn. – The No. 19 ranked Cumberland Phoenix took care of business in their opener, defeating the Union Commonwealth Bulldogs 4-0.

After a long offseason, the Phoenix started the game strong, with an immediate chance within the first minute. About six minutes later, the first goal of the season would be scored by Aoi Kanno, with an impressive shot from 33 yards out. Kanno had a fantastic view of the goal after Miku Kayama attracted the attention of two Bulldog defenders and laid off the pass for her first assist.

The Bulldogs would get their first good chance a couple of minutes later off of a free kick just outside of the penalty box, but Celia Martin made an impressive save at the top of the goal to stop the opportunity.

In the 17th minute, Kadisha Martina would double the Cumberland lead in the 17th minute. The Curcacoan was fed an excellent pass from Miku Kayama between two defenders and slotted her shot away easily.

The rest of the half turned into a slugfest, trading shots back and forth with nobody holding clear possession of the ball for long periods of time. It looked like the score could have held until the half. However, In the 43rd minute, Olga Wallemo would draw a penalty in the box.

Seika Stull stepped up to take the shot and her effort froze the goalkeeper, landing in the bottom right side of the net. That goal meant that the Phoenix took a 3-0 lead into the break, having only faced one shot on goal in the half.

Heading into the second half, the Bulldogs changed their focus to keeping possession, where they had six more shots than in the first half. With the shift in play the game slowed down for Cumberland, who were happy to sit and defend in their own half, allowing them to break on the counter.

Like the end of the first half, it looked like the second half was going to end with both sides in a goal drought, though Niamh Warrender had different plans. The Welsh sent the ball nearly 50 yards downfield to Kadisha Martina, which would seal the deal, and Cumberland would win their season opener 4-0.

That fourth goal cemented a dominant first game for the Phoenix and will now wait until next Friday for their next match, their home opener. Sienna Heights University from Michigan will travel south with kickoff set for 12 PM on August 29th.
