Cumberland Women's Soccer Gets the Home Opener Win Behind a Pair of Goals in One Minute

LEBANON, Tenn, – The Phoenix got three goals in the second half, including two in one minute, and was able to pull away from the Siena Heights Saints.

The first half started with a lot of back and forth in the middle of the field. The first breakthrough featured Cumberland midfielder Aoi Kanno getting the first, and only, shot on goal for Cumberland in the first half at the nine minute mark.

Both the Phoenix and Saints displayed great defending in the midfield, and neither team could get a look that could lead to a goal in the first half. The half ended scoreless for both sides 0-0.

Entering the second half the Phoenix had a heightened sense of urgency. They almost had a goal in the 51st minute, but it was ruled offside as the shot was in the air. Then, just five minutes later, the Saints had a goal that was ruled offside in a similar manner.

Then, in the 66th minute, Cumberland earned their first corner kick, which was taken by Seika Stull, and after a header by the Saints, landed with freshman Adelyn Drane, who gave it up to Aoi Kanno, and the midfielder found the net to get her second goal of the season in very similar fashion to her first.

However, Cumberland wasn't done yet, as just 52 seconds later, freshman Victoria Collins fought through two defenders and was able to find fellow freshman Matilda Walker in the center of the box to double up the score and give both freshmen their first points of their college careers.

After those two goals, the Phoenix were content to hold possession and leave with a 2-0 win, but then Olga Wallermo was able to find an opening, and took it. Finding the soft spot of the defense and getting the unassisted goal for the first of her college career to make it 3-0 Cumberland in the 85th minute.

Goalkeeper Ciela Martin didn't have much trouble today recording her second clean sheet of the season. Only having to see six shots by the Saints, and only having to face three of them on goal. Meanwhile, the Phoenix were putting a lot of pressure on that Saints defense with 16 shots, and six shots on goal.

It is a quick turnaround for the Phoenix, as they face the first ranked matchup of the season as they host No. 11 Marian on Sunday August 31st at 12 pm.
