No. 11 Marian outlast No. 19 Cumberland in a 2-1 Match

LEBANON, Tenn.--No. 11 Marian outlasts No. 19 Cumberland 2-1 despite playing a player down over the final 50 minutes to hand CU their first loss of the season.

For the match, Marian outshot Cumberland 14-9 and held a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. The Knights put 10 shots on frame while Cumberland managed just four in the match.

Victoria Collins scored a goal for Cumberland on an assist from Seika Stull. Sammie King and Sienna Mullen each scored goals for the Knights. Marian Corro Celma and Allie Tredway each picked up an assist.

Cumberland's Celia Martin had a strong performance in goal with eight saves, including five in the second half, to keep the Phoenix within striking distance. Lily Ames conceded one goal for the Knights while making three saves.

The Phoenix were the aggressors to start the game as the Phoenix created a quick opportunity with a long ball over the top to striker Collins, but her shot sailed wide. However, a few minutes later, Seika Stull found Collins again behind the backline of Marian and this time she capitalized with an early goal.

In the seventh minute, Collins had another chance as she worked past the backline once again, but her shot this time sailed over the crossbar.

As Marian settled into the half, the Knights began creating opportunities on Cumberland's half. The Phoenix fended off a set piece outside the box and a corner kick before the Knights registered their first shot on goal when Katie Koger ripped a shot right at CU keeper Martin in the 18th minute.

10 minutes later, Marian leveled it with a goal. Allie Tredway played the ball to the near post to Sienna Mullen for a one-time shot into the back of the net. The Knights kept the pressure up as they took the lead two minutes later in the 30th minute. Sammie King created space and ripped a shot from outside of the box to find the go-ahead goal.

Just before the half ended, Marian's Kaitlyn Lavezzi picked up two yellow cards to force the Knights into playing the rest of the match a player down.

Marian didn't miss a beat down a player to start the second half as Katie Koger had two great looks at goal, but keeper Martin made two nice saves, the first charging Koger for the save and the second a diving save to her left.

Cumberland had a chance on a set piece in the 56th minute. Seika Stull took the free kick from outside the box and fired it off the crossbar. Moments later, Aoi Kanno chipped it over to Miku Kayama for a header that was saved to keep the Knights up 2-1 with 33 minutes left.

Following the Phoenix attack, the Knights had three shots on goal that Martin stifled.

Cumberland generated more chances in the second half, outshooting Marian 8-6 over the final 45 minutes, but goalkeeper Lily Ames tallied three saves to preserve the Knights' advantage.

Cumberland remains at home for their next match on Wednesday playing host to Brescia. The game is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
