Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Spoils Shared with Phoenix and #11 Pilots at Red Storm Classic

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - - The Cumberland men's soccer team took on the No. 11 ranked Bethel Pilots in their second top-15 matchup already this season.

Setting the tone for what looked to be another physical battle for the Phoenix, a Bethel defender made a hard tackle and drew a yellow card from the center ref, just three minutes into the first half. With strong early pressure the Pilots were able to slot away the first goal of the game in the 14th minute, but it would be far from the only goal in the half.

Harold Perea answered with Cumberland's first shot and first shot on goal of the game in the 16th minute, but it would be last week's MSC Offensive Player of the Week that would pull the Phoenix back into the game. Adding yet another assist to his already impressive total, Luis Cerejo slotted a ball into Philipp Schmidtke who buried his shot and leveled things, though he was not finished in this half yet.

Just eight minutes later Jostin Angel opened his account for the season with a lovely pass into Schmidtke who buried his shot and made it a first half brace for himself, as well as a CU lead before halftime at 2-1. That lead was short-lived however as the game was moving at a lightning pace, seeing the Pilots land themselves a game-tying goal in the 42nd minute, finally making it 2-2 at the break.

With the game starting to be a real back and forth in the first half, the Phoenix were first to pull back in the second half. Cumberland took the lead in the 75th minute as Pau Ortega spotted the keeper with just enough room off his line to take a shot and the Spaniard's effort from his own half found the back of the net, 3-2 for CU.

Moving quickly to level things, Bethel scored less than four minutes later, giving us our final score of 3-3 in a battle of two very strong teams. Bethel narrowly edged Cumberland in shots with 12 to CU's 11, while Eric Zalaya made one more save than the Pilots shotstopper.

The Phoenix will have one day off tomorrow before playing their second and final game of the weekend series, taking on Grace College early Monday afternoon.
