Men's Soccer Scores Three Unanswered to Stay Unbeaten

RIO GRANDE, Ohio--Cumberland men's soccer continued its unbeaten start to the season, rallying past Grace (Ind.) for a 3-1 win on Monday afternoon at the RedStorm Classic. The Phoenix struck just before halftime to erase an early deficit and controlled the second half to secure the victory.

Cumberland finished with 11 total shots, seven of which were on frame, making the most of their opportunities. Pau Ortega led the way with his two goals, while Miguel Gelabert added one of his own to continue his early-season form. Philipp Schmidtke created pressure throughout the match with four shots, three on target. In net, Eric Zalaya turned away three saves and stood tall in the final minutes as the Lancers pushed forward.

Grace finished by outshooting Cumberland with 13 total shots, however, the backline did a great job at keeping them off frame. The Lancers only had four shots in total on goal. Juan Garcia scored the lone goal for Grace while Sebastian Lozano and Luis Munoz each posted three shots.

Grace broke through first in the 42nd minute when Juan Garcia converted a penalty kick to give the Lancers a 1-0 advantage. Cumberland answered almost immediately, as Pau Ortega found the back of the net in the 45th minute, shifting the momentum heading into the break with the score level at 1-1.

The Phoenix wasted little time in the second half creating chances, and in the 61st minute Miguel Gelabert delivered the go-ahead strike, tallying what proved to be the game-winner. Ortega added his second goal of the afternoon in the 84th minute, capping off a strong offensive performance and sealing the 3-1 result.

The match was a battle featuring 26 total foul calls between both teams. Six yellow cards were issued in total with four going to Phoenix.

The win pushes Cumberland to 3-0-1 on the year, while Grace drops to 1-1-2. The Phoenix return home on Friday for their home opener, welcoming Tennessee Southern to Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.
