Phoenix Battle to 5-5 Stalemate with UT Southern Firehawks in Home Opener

LEBANON, Tenn. - - With fireworks from beginning to end, the No. 18 ranked Cumberland men's soccer team drew 5-5 with former conference foes UT Southern in their home opener this afternoon.

Hosting the Firehawks after a 9-1 thrashing on the road last season, it was always going to be a tough draw for both sides as each team came into this game with three wins and no losses. It was the away side who put the first shot on goal in the opening minute of the game, but the Phoenix struck the back of the net first.

Opening the scoring, Pau Ortega delivered a perfect inswinging corner kick to Alejandro Vega at the second post and the Colombian defender struck his header home, 1-0 for the Phoenix. Striking in quick succession, it took just one minute and one second for Cumberland to add in another.

Harold Perea drove down the right wing and cut past one defender, making way to lay off another sweet assist to Philipp Schmidtke who has now scored or assisted in all but one of Cumberland's games. The final blow of the first half came by way of Miquel Gelabert who has also had a great start to the season.

From the same position that Perea assisted, the Spaniard cut onto his left foot and took a shot which rebounded out, and then finally struck into the back of the net on the second effort.

With a three goal deficit to fight back from, the Firehawks came out ready to play. From the 49th minute of the game to the 73rd, Southern were able to put four in the back of the net and take the lead away from the Phoenix on their home opener.

Getting the game back level, Gelabert took on three defenders and sliced his way through the UTS backline before eventually slotting a pass into an unmarked Luis Cerejo, tying the game at 4-4 with eight minutes left to play.

Adding to the drama filled half, the Phoenix were fouled near the edge of the box and CU took full advantage. Enea Elmazi sent a cross into the box which Kacper Wolicki headed into the open space in front of goal and stood waiting to pounce, who better than back-to-back Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Philipp Schmidtke.

Spoils were shared in the end however as the Firehawks were given a penalty with less than two minutes on the clock, and converted their attempt to make the final, 5-5.

Cumberland will be back in action this coming Tuesday as the Phoenix host the Bryan College Lions, with kick off set for 1 PM.
