Women's Volleyball Splits the Second Day of the Big Easy Blastoff

NEW ORLEANS, LA. -- Women's Volleyball split the second pair of games in Louisiana.

Cumberland won their first game of the day on Saturday against Southern University at New Orleans. The Phoenix won in three sets: 25-17, 25-11, 25-20.
The Phoenix racked up an impressive 46 kills, with Hazel Konkel having a 0.588 kill percentage. Lila Cade hit eight kills and seven digs. Paulina Dziedzic added seven kills while Sydney Andrews tallied up nine. Morgan Snead had a strong performance, with 14 digs. The team finished the match with a .260 hitting percentage and held the knights to only a 0.12 percentage.

Cumberland led the first set from the very beginning and proved to be too strong for Southern University. The Knights went on a four-point run but it wasn't enough as CU took the first set 25-17.
The second set was much like the first with the Phoenix going 5-3 up early. 11 kills and eight Knights errors helped Cumberland take a significant lead. Southern University looked defeated towards the end as Phoenix racked up four points in a row and finished the set 25-11.

The final set was the closest of the three as the knights attempted to make a push, but the Phoenix were able to keep up the momentum and take the game in three sets.

Cumberland carried their momentum from the first game into their second match up as they faced Xavier University of Louisiana. However, XULA came out firing and went on a 7-1 run. The Phoenix trailed 9-16 but managed to regroup, and go on a run of their own, a number of kills in attack allowed the team to level the game at 16-16. The remainder of the set was closely fought, with Cumberland coming out on top.

The second and third set were very even with both teams battling hard and showcasing some great volleyball. The Phoenix hit 12 kills in the second set, but six errors held them back allowing XULA to gain the advantage and take the set 20-25. The home side managed to hold Cumberland to a .108 hitting percentage in the third set and only made three errors which allowed them to take the third 19-25.

Going into the fourth Xavier really had momentum, holding the Phoenix to only a 0.100 hitting percentage. Cumberland battled and got back within reach of Xavier however, the home side didn't let up ultimately taking the set and the victory in four sets: 26-24, 20-25, 19-25, 23-25.

The Phoenix will be back in action again on September 2nd as they head to Oakland City, Indiana to face Oakland City University.
