Phoenix Rally Past Pikeville with Big Second Half Comeback

PIKEVILLE, Ky.--Cumberland football used a dominant second-half surge to erase a 17-0 deficit and rally past Pikeville, 21-17, on Saturday evening at Hambley Athletic Complex. The win moves the Phoenix to 3-1 on the season while the Bears remain winless at 0-3.

Cumberland finished with 300 yards of offense, led by Cornejo's 65 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Cumberland was paced by running back Jacob Cornejo, who carried 18 times for 65 yards and punched in the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jaylen Abston threw for 79 yards and a 66-yard touchdown to Isaiah O'Neal, who finished with four receptions for 96 yards. Zach Holtzclaw added 90 yards through the air, including a 46-yard connection with William Spence

On special teams, Tyreke Boyd provided a game-changing blocked punt that Cannon Johnson returned for a touchdown. Johnson also added nine tackles defensively. Defensively, Daniel Doegan and Chazz Hunter each tallied nine stops, with Hunter also recording a 56-yard fumble return to set up the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter.

Pikeville ran 77 plays to Cumberland's 54 and held the ball for nearly 36 minutes, but costly penalties (12 for 107 yards) and three turnovers swung the momentum. Xavier Malone completed 31-of-41 passes for 271 yards and rushed for a one-yard touchdown. Amon Williams carried the ball 28 times for 79 yards and a score while adding eight receptions for 51 yards. Jordan Williams led the Bears with nine catches for 85 yards, and Brandon Newton hauled in five passes for 60 yards.
.
On defense, Najmir Bellegar recorded a team-high eight tackles with three tackles for loss, and Levi Evans added seven stops and two blocked punts. Kicker Isaac Smith went 2-for-2 on extra points and connected on a 20-yard field goal.

The night started slow for Cumberland as Pikeville controlled the first half. The Bears struck first late in the opening quarter, capping a 14-play, 67-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run by Amon Williams. They extended the lead midway through the second quarter on a 20-yard field goal from Isaac Smith and went into halftime with a 10-0 advantage. After Cumberland missed a 45-yard field goal just before the break, Pikeville padded its lead to 17-0 early in the third quarter when quarterback Xavier Malone snuck in from a yard out to finish a 76-yard drive.

Facing their largest deficit of the year, the Phoenix offense and special teams delivered. On the ensuing drive, Jaylen Abston connected with Isaiah O'Neal for a 66-yard strike down the sideline to put Cumberland on the board. Just over a minute later, the Phoenix tied the game in dramatic fashion when Cannon Johnson scooped up a blocked punt and returned it three yards for a touchdown.

Cumberland's defense continued to make critical stops, and the turning point came early in the fourth quarter when Chazz Hunter recovered a Pikeville fumble and returned it 56 yards to set up the Phoenix at the three-yard line. On the very next play, Jacob Cornejo powered in for the go-ahead touchdown, giving Cumberland its first lead of the night at 21-17 with 10:40 remaining.

The Phoenix defense sealed the victory down the stretch, forcing two punts, a missed Pikeville field goal, and a turnover on downs in the final minutes.

Cumberland will continue its four-game road swing next weekend with their longest trip of the year at Florida Memorial.
