The No. 14 Phoenix Come Back and Upset the No. 2 Patriots Behind Varela's Heroics

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland Women's Soccer would upset the No. 2 University of the Cumberlands Patriots 2-1 behind late game heroics.

The Phoenix started out the game strong, with Senior forward Kadisha Martina getting a shot on goal in the first minute of the game and forcing multiple scoring opportunities in the box.

The Patriots would open the scoring on their first shot in the 22nd minute after a strike just inside of the penalty box.

After that opening goal, the Patriots took control of the game, creating multiple scoring chances off of corner kicks.

The Patriots almost doubled their lead, but a shot that hit the far post and a shot that was just over the goal kept the score at 1-0.

The half would end with the score staying at 1-0. The Phoenix had seven shots, and four shots on goal. Meanwhile, the Patriots would have nine shots, and three shots on goal.

To begin the second half, the Patriots would control the possession. However, the first chance of the half would go to a Seika Stull header.

In the 57th minute, Olga Wallemo would find the equalizer off of a Stull corner kick to make the score 1-1. This is Wallemo's fifth goal of the season and puts her in a tie for the most goals in the conference.

Both teams would trade possessions in the midfield after the goal, with the Phoenix and Patriots trading scoring opportunities.

After the water break, the Patriots started to put on the pressure, with two near misses in 90 seconds.

After a beautiful through ball by Seika Stull, Uxia Varella found the back of the net to take the late lead 2-1. Varella was in the game for only five minutes and got the goal across the goalkeeper in the 81st minute. Stull would reach eight assists on the season, which would put her in a comfortable lead in the conference, and tied for third in the nation.

The Phoenix would play dominating defense for the last nine minutes and the Phoenix upset the No. 2 Patriots 2-1!

Cumberland would finish the game with 13 shots, and eight shots on goal, and the Cumberlands would finish with 14 shots, but only four shots on goal.

The Phoenix are back at home against No. 17 Life University on Wednesday September 24, at 1:00 PM.
