Women’s Soccer Fall to Georgia Gwinnett

Lawrenceville, Ga. - - After going 1-0 up at half time, two second half goals from Georgia Gwinnett turned the tide as the Grizzlies took the 2-1 victory.

It was the Phoenix who looked the stronger of the two in the opening stages of the first half Aoi Kanno and Miku Kayama hitting the target in the opening six minutes. Only moments later, Kadisha Martina connected with a Seika Stull cross and found the back of the net, however, the goal was ruled offside.

Martina kept pushing for the opener, and she got her reward in the 19th minute as she picked up the ball from Stull on the edge of the box and hit a looping strike which chipped the Grizzlies goalkeeper to make the game 1-0 and take Martina to four goals this season.

Cumberland kept pushing to get the second, but a strong Georgia Gwinnett managed to keep it 1-0 going into the break.

The Grizzlies started the second half with high intensity, and showing real intent to equalize. The high pressure and fast play paid off for the home side, as Natalie Magurie got on the end of a cross and buried it for the first time. The momentum was all with the Grizzlies after the goal, as they brought in fresh legs to make an impact. In the 78th minute after a corner was only half cleared by the Phoenix, the Grizzlies put the ball back in the danger area and found the back of the net.

Cumberland tried to fight back and get the equalizer, however Georgia Gwinnett were well drilled as they game ended 1-2 in their favor.

The Phoenix will look to bounce back on Wednesday as they face Lindsey Wilson in the conference.
