Cumberland Survives Four Match Points to Claim Road Victory at Freed-Hardeman

HENDERSON, Tenn.--Cumberland women's volleyball battled through a five-set thriller Tuesday night, edging Freed-Hardeman on the road, 3-2, inside Brewer Sports Center. The Phoenix rallied twice to force a deciding set and held on for a 23-21 victory in the fifth to stay unbeaten in Mid-South Conference play.

Cumberland (18-7, 2-0 MSC) totaled 55 kills with a .168 hitting percentage, adding 55 assists and 10 service aces on the night. The Phoenix defense played a major role, collecting 77 digs and 11 total team blocks, while the serve-receive unit limited errors to six.

Individually, Lila Cade led the way with a team-high 20 kills and 15 digs for a double-double, while also adding three aces to finish with 23.5 points. Carlee Rogers dished out 34 assists, picked up 13 digs, and contributed seven kills with five total blocks. Hazel Konkel was strong at the net with nine kills and six blocks, and Alei Roper chipped in 10 kills. Morgan Snead anchored the back row with a match-high 23 digs, while Hailey Jones and Sydney Andrews added key points at the net.

Freed-Hardeman (11-6, 0-1 MSC) finished with 62 kills, hitting .203 as a team, and recorded 56 assists along with six service aces. The Lions dug 91 balls and managed three total blocks while keeping the pressure on with consistent offensive swings.

For FHU, Audrey Orton led with 16 kills and 21 digs, while Hope Breen tallied 14 kills and Iza Wos added 10 with a .500 hitting percentage. Becca Heineman and Alyssa Austin combined for 50 assists, and libero Autumn Howard registered 23 digs. Avery Young also posted a strong defensive showing with 24 digs.

In the opening set, Freed-Hardeman established momentum with a 25-18 win behind an efficient .379 hitting percentage. Cumberland managed 12 kills but was slowed by six errors in the frame.

The Phoenix responded in set two, pulling away late for a 25-22 victory to even the match. Cade delivered clutch swings, and CU's defense came alive, highlighted by four blocks in the set.

The Lions countered in set three with a 25-19 win. Their offense clicked again, producing 14 kills at a .286 clip, as they regained a 2-1 match lead.

Cumberland answered back in the fourth, the Phoenix ran out to a big lead extending it up as much as 18-10. Freed-Hardeman rattled off the next seven points to bring it back to a one-point match, but CU responded with a 7-1 run to close it out and force a set five.

In a dramatic fifth set, the tension ratcheted up as both teams traded blows deep into extra rallies. Cumberland held six match points in the frame, while Freed-Hardeman had four chances to close out the match themselves. Neither side flinched as the score stayed level late, with clutch kills and defensive stops extending the contest. Finally, with the Phoenix leading 22-21, Delaney Jones delivered a service ace to set up the decisive moment, and a Freed attack error sealed the 23-21 victory for Cumberland in one of the season's most intense finishes.

Cumberland returns home on Friday night to host Georgetown in another Mid-South Conference matchup. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. inside the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
