Cumberland Volleyball Hosts Georgetown in Pursuit of 3-0 Conference Start

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Women's Volleyball looks to stay perfect in conference play as they host the Georgetown Tigers. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Cumberland (18-7, 2-0 MSC) comes into this match winning three of their last four and their first two conference games, sweeping Bethel at home, and coming back to win in five sets against Freed Hardeman. In their match against the Lions, sophomore Lila Cade got her second career game with 20 kills, as well as 15 digs to earn her eighth double-double of the season. Freshman Carlee Rogers also earned her 15th double-double of the season with 34 assists and 13 digs. 

The Phoenix defense has been solid this season, as they are leading the NAIA in digs (1,518) and total blocks (197) and are second in solo blocks (57) while also being third in block assists (288). Senior libero Morgan Snead is leading the defense with 322 digs, which leads the Mid-South, and 464 receptions. Senior middle hitter Hazel Konkel is leading the conference in solo blocks (20), block assists (68), and total blocks (88), while being fourth in blocks per set.

Offensively, Cumberland is led by sophomore outside hitter Lila Cade, who is leading the conference in kills (284), total attacks (802), total points (336.5) and is averaging a double-double (11.36 kills per match and 10.48 digs per match). Freshman setter Carlee Rogers has had an impressive freshman season. As the Jasper, Indiana native is tied for third in the conference in total assists (576), fifth in the conference in digs (242), and is almost averaging a double-double (23.04 assists per match and 9.68 digs per match). Konkel is continuing her strong career at Cumberland with 197 kills (fourth in MSC), on a .374 hitting percentage. Alei Roper is having a breakout season with 151 kills (seventh in MSC), on a .203 hitting percentage.

For Georgetown (2-10, 0-2 MSC), they are finishing a seven game road trip and are looking for their first conference win of the season. In their last two conference games, they were swept on the road at RV Lindsey Wilson and lost at Campbellsville in four sets.

Freshman outside hitter Mallori Dunn-Martin is leading the Tigers' offensive attack with 84 kills, and 2.15 kills per set. Junior middle hitter Giara Ferrari and senior opposite hitter Maria Alves are supporting the attack with 70 kills and 68 kills respectively. Sophomore setter Faith Miller and freshman setter Reagan Miller are leading the Tigers in assists with 150 assists. Defensively, Junior defensive specialist Abby Walker is leading Georgetown in digs with 130, Dunn-Martin and sophomore defensive specialist Laura Custodio are also strong options defensively with 78 digs and 76 digs respectively.

In the series, dating back to 2000, Georgetown leads the series with a record of 8-21 against the Phoenix. The Tigers saw a lot of success against CU in the 2010s winning 15 straight. However, the Phoenix have won six of the last eight matches, including a sweep in the Mid-South Conference Tournament. At home, Cumberland has a record of 5-7 over Georgetown.

Looking at the other matchups in the conference, Freed-Hardeman (11-6, 0-1 MSC) will travel to face off against Bethel (4-6, 0-1 MSC) on Friday. The Phoenix are one of two teams who are undefeated in conference play, the other team is No. 14 University of the Cumberlands Patriots (15-0, 2-0 MSC).
