Phoenix Split Final Day, Finish Hampton Inn Classic 3-1

COLUMBIA, Mo.--Cumberland women's volleyball split a pair of matches on the final day of the Hampton Inn Classic on Saturday, falling to host Columbia College in straight sets before responding with a 3-0 sweep of Tabor to close the weekend with a 3-1 record.

The Phoenix dropped the opener to Columbia, 25-17, 25-23, 25-16. Cumberland struggled to find its rhythm offensively against the host Cougars, finishing with 29 kills and 22 attack errors on 100 attempts for a .070 hitting percentage. Columbia countered by hitting .310 with 35 kills against only eight errors and held a 7-1 advantage in blocks.

Carola Schnidrig led the Phoenix with eight kills and added eight digs and two service aces. Hailey Jones followed with seven kills while hitting .250, and Liberty Shadix was efficient in the middle with five kills on nine attempts for a .556 hitting percentage. Jacey Hubbell added five kills.

Carlee Rogers handed out 21 assists and finished with 10 digs, while Kaleigh Glass led the back row with 12 digs. Cumberland did have success from the service line, recording seven aces, including two each from Schnidrig and AJ Bryant.

Columbia took control of the opening set early, turning a 2-2 tie into a 10-4 advantage. The Phoenix were unable to close the gap as the Cougars hit .407 in the frame to take the opener, 25-17.

Cumberland put together its best offensive set of the match in the second, recording 16 kills and hitting .233. The Phoenix stayed within striking distance throughout the frame, but Columbia held off Cumberland late for a 25-23 victory and a 2-0 advantage.

The Cougars carried the momentum into the third, while Cumberland committed nine attack errors and was held to a -.143 hitting percentage. Columbia closed out the match with a 25-16 win.

The Phoenix quickly put the loss behind them, turning in a dominant defensive performance against Tabor. Cumberland held the Bluejays to a -.049 hitting percentage with just 20 kills against 25 errors while posting 10 total blocks. Offensively, the Phoenix hit .315 with 39 kills and only 11 errors.

Cumberland received contributions throughout the lineup. Rogers, Schnidrig and Jones each recorded eight kills. Rogers hit .400 and added 16 assists, while Jones hit .438. Schnidrig hit .316 and added 14 digs and two aces. Bianca Guceanu was nearly flawless offensively, posting seven kills without an error on 14 swings for a .500 hitting percentage.

Liberty Shadix anchored the Phoenix at the net with six block assists, while Emma Chavers dished out 17 assists and collected nine digs. Glass matched Schnidrig with a team-high 14 digs and added an ace.

Tabor raced out to an early advantage in the first set, but Cumberland battled its way back into the frame. After trailing by as many as eight, the Phoenix chipped away at the deficit and completed the comeback late to steal the opening set, 25-23.

Cumberland carried that momentum into a dominant second set. The Phoenix hit .400 with 12 kills and only two errors while Tabor committed 10 attack errors and finished the frame at -.212. Cumberland cruised to a 25-10 win to move one set away from the sweep.

The Bluejays made another push in the third, but Cumberland again delivered down the stretch. The Phoenix put away 13 kills in the frame and closed out the 25-23 victory to complete the sweep.

Cumberland finished the Hampton Inn Classic with wins over Central Methodist, St. Ambrose and Tabor, with its lone loss coming against host Columbia. The 3-1 weekend moves the Phoenix to 5-3 on the season.
