Phoenix Fall to Arizona Christian in First Match Out West

GLENDALE, Ariz.--Cumberland opened its first western road trip of the season Thursday, falling to Arizona Christian in straight sets at the Firestorm Recreation Center.

The Firestorm defeated the Phoenix 25-18, 25-22 and 25-21, dropping Cumberland to 5-4 on the season.

Arizona Christian used an early run to take control of the opening set. Cumberland battled back from a five-point deficit with six consecutive points, tying the set at 14-14 on a kill from Hailey Jones. The Firestorm answered with four straight points and pulled away late for the 25-18 win.

The Phoenix played from in front early in the second set and held a 9-8 advantage following a block from Jones and Jacey Hubbell. Arizona Christian moved ahead with the next two points and gradually stretched its lead to 20-15. Cumberland made a late push behind kills from Carola Schnidrig and Hubbell, cutting the deficit to 24-22 before the Firestorm closed the set.

Cumberland again started quickly in the third, taking a 4-2 lead behind two Hubbell kills and an ace from Jones. The teams remained within two points of one another until Arizona Christian used a 5-0 run to build an 18-14 advantage. The Phoenix fought off three match points, but the Firestorm finished the sweep with a 25-21 victory.

Hubbell led Cumberland with nine kills while hitting .217 and adding two block assists. Jones and Schnidrig each finished with six kills, with Jones contributing three block assists and the Phoenix's lone service ace. Liberty Shadix recorded five kills on a team-best .267 hitting percentage with one solo block and two block assists.

Carlee Rogers distributed 27 assists and collected 10 digs for a double-double. Kaleigh Glass led the back row with 16 digs, while Schnidrig added nine.

Cumberland finished with 37 kills and a .090 hitting percentage. Arizona Christian hit .195 with 38 kills and improved to 4-2.

The Phoenix continue their trip to Arizona tomorrow to start the OUAZ Invitational with two matches Friday. The phoenix will take on Park University (Ariz.) at 4:00 p.m. and the host Ottawa University (Ariz.) at 7:00 p.m. central time.
