Phoenix Second Half Effort Comes Up Just Short As CU Falls 79-73 to Blue Raiders

COLUMBIA, Ky. - - Cumberland men's basketball battled throughout but ultimately dropped their conference opener to Lindsey Wilson, 79-73.

Triston Conger delivered a strong all-around performance for Cumberland, leading the Phoenix with 19 points, five assists, and four rebounds while logging all 40 minutes, though the guard fouled out in the final thirty seconds. Conger was aggressive on both ends, finishing 6-of-12 from the field and knocking down a pair of three-pointers while also drawing a number of fouls and converting at the free-throw line, going 5-6.

Michael Nwoye provided a key spark in the paint, posting 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds, including six on the offensive glass, helping Cumberland generate their best run of the game in the second half. Jake Hatch was also efficient offensively, scoring 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and connecting on three triples to keep the Phoenix within striking distance during critical stretches. Nick Brunetti added 10 points and five rebounds, while Jordan Jenkins chipped in eight points and five boards off the bench.

Cumberland finished with 38 total rebounds and outscored Lindsey Wilson in the second half, 35-32, as the Phoenix made their case to win the game, including taking a late two-point lead, though it was just too little too late. A pair of threes right at the 11-minute mark of the second half put Cumberland within striking distance and with Nwoye nailing three out of four shots from the charity stripe, CU went ahead 61-59 to lead for the first time since the opening minutes.

Keeping the crowd on their side, the Blue Raiders responded to that deficit with a seven point swing on the offensive end, as well as shutting out the Phoenix for over three minutes from Nwoye's final free throw. After it was all said and done the efforts of the Phoenix were just not enough as Kenyata Carbon of the Blue Raiders managed in second straight 30+ point effort and LWU would defend their home court.

Cumberland will now await yet another road contest as they will take on the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky next Thursday at 6:30 PM.
