Cold First Half Costs Cumberland in 72-56 Loss to Campbellsville

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland trimmed a second-half deficit to single digits late, but a cold-shooting first half proved too much to overcome as Campbellsville pulled away for a 72-56 Mid-South Conference win inside the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.

The Phoenix finished at 35.1 percent from the floor (20-of-57) and 37.5 percent from three-point range (6-of-16), but struggled at the free-throw line, converting just 10-of-17 attempts (58.8%). Cumberland totaled 32 rebounds and nine assists, forced 15 turnovers, and committed 17 turnovers of its own.

Jordan Jenkins led Cumberland with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. Riggs Abner followed with 11 points behind three made triples, while Jaren Davis added nine points. Zaylin Rowland pulled down a team-high five rebounds, and Triston Conger dished out two assists.

Campbellsville shot 43.9 percent from the field (25-of-57) and connected on 11 three-pointers at a 35.5 percent clip. The Tigers were efficient at the free-throw line, going 11-of-14 (78.6%), and held a 38-32 advantage on the boards while recording 18 assists.

Javaughn Smith and Marcellus Vail paced Campbellsville with 14 points apiece. Smith knocked down four three-pointers and added six assists, while Vail finished a perfect 4-for-5 from the floor. Parker Jones chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds, and Eli Brooks contributed nine points.

Cumberland opened the game with an early free throw but quickly found itself battling through a prolonged scoring drought. Campbellsville used early three-pointers from Dalton Kramer and Javaughn Smith to fuel a 21-12 run, seizing control of the tempo and forcing the Phoenix to play from behind.

The Phoenix struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the opening half, shooting just 21.4 percent from the field. Buckets from Michael Nwoye, Jordan Jenkins, and Jaren Davis helped slow the momentum briefly, but Campbellsville closed the half on a 10-0 run to take a 31-18 lead into the locker room.

Cumberland showed improved energy coming out of the break, cutting into the deficit with better ball movement and shot-making. A three-pointer from Riggs Abner, along with finishes from Jenkins and Nwoye, helped the Phoenix pull within 50-32 midway through the second half.

Each Cumberland push was answered by Campbellsville, as the Tigers responded with timely shooting from the perimeter. Back-to-back three-pointers from Smith and Vail extended the margin to as many as 27 points at 64-37. Cumberland mounted a late rally, scoring seven unanswered points in the final 90 seconds, but the early hole proved too deep to escape.

Cumberland was originally slated to play on the road at Freed-Hardeman on Saturday, however, the game has been canceled. Cumberland will take on Lindsey Wilson for the second time on January 31 at the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena for their next game.
