Men’s Basketball Looks to Get Payback Against Lindsey Wilson At Home

LEBANON, Tenn.-- Cumberland men's basketball returns home Saturday afternoon looking to flip the script, as the Phoenix host Lindsey Wilson with a chance to snap an eight-game skid and avenge a narrow road loss earlier this season.

The Phoenix (8-11, 0-4 MSC) is looking to find something that works as Cumberland has lost the last three games by 15 or more points, including a 56-72 loss to Campbellsville.

As a team, the Phoenix average 77.8 points per game on 44.8% shooting from the field, 31.3% from three and 69.3% from the free throw line this season. On the glass, Cumberland is able to have a slight margin of 2 rebounds per game (39.1-37.1). Defensively, the Phoenix allow 79.4 points per game on 44.8% shooting from the field, 33.5% from three, and 68.1% from the free throw line.

If Cumberland is able to pull off the win, they will need to get some production from junior guard Triston Conger. Conger averages 18.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game this season. However, the Hendersonville native was held to just two points, four rebounds, and two assists in the game against the Tigers. Freshman forward Michael Nwoye has been a strong force on the boards this season, as the Antioch native has averaged 12.8 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 3.6 offensive rebounds. Sophomore guard Nick Brunetti is the other player that averages over 30 minutes per game alongside Conger, and averages 10.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. Freshman guard Zaylin Rowland has been a consistent force off of the bench averaging 9.1 points, on 42.9% shooting from the field and 33% from three. Junior guard Jordan Jenkins has been a bright spot off of the bench as the Antioch native has scored in double figures in the past two games and going 8-15 from the field, 3-3 from three, and 3-5 from the free throw line. 

For Lindsey Wilson (15-5, 4-1 MSC) they are looking to get another winning streak going after they routed Campbellsville 83-68. The Blue Raiders sit in second place in the conference standings with their only loss being to top seeded Freed-Hardeman 60-75. 

Lindsey Wilson averages 83.2 points per game on 48.6% shooting from the field, 37.8% from three, and 73.8% from the free throw line, while allowing only 74.4 points per game on 43% from the field, 35.3% from three, and 71.7% from the free throw line. The Blue Raiders average 36.6 rebounds per game and 3.9 blocks per game as well to control the glass.

Individually, Junior guard Kenyata Carbon has been a microwave scorer for the Blue Raiders, as Carbon is averaging 19.1 points per game on 59.8/37.5/72.3 shooting splits. The Owensboro, Ky native scored 33 points and collected 11 rebounds in the first matchup against the Phoenix en route to NAIA Player of the Week honors that week. Carbon has also earned five Mid-South Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors this season. Freshman forward Mihail Gavazov has been their best player on the boards, averaging 11.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while shooting 42.7% from three. In the previous matchup against Cumberland, Gavazov scored 10 points and collected five rebounds and shooting 2-6 from three. 

Looking at the history between the Phoenix and Blue Raiders, Lindsey Wilson has a commanding lead in the overall head-to-head matchup as Cumberland is 13-30 against the Blue Raiders. The most recent matchup was a close affair as Lindsey Wilson won 79-73, and Cumberland is on a five game losing streak in the series. When the Phoenix are at home against the Blue Raiders, Cumberland has a 10-9 record. 

In the meeting earlier this season, Cumberland had a tough time getting into the paint especially in the first half as Lindsey Wilson collected eight blocks in the game. Cumberland finished shooting 41.8% and 6-of-13 beyond the arc. The Phoenix trailed by as much as 12 in the contest before rallying to tie the game at 59-59 in the second half before the Blue Raiders pulled away.
