Patriots Sweep Phoenix in Lebanon

LEBANON, Tenn.--Bianca Guceanu recorded 11 kills on a .409 hitting percentage, but Cumberland could not slow Cumberlands' efficient attack as the Phoenix fell in straight sets Tuesday evening at Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena, 25-21, 25-17, 25-16.

Cumberland finished with a 42-36 advantage in kills but committed 21 attack errors to hit .193. The Phoenix totaled 40 assists, 45 digs, five blocks and two service aces, while nine service errors helped the Patriots create separation.

Guceanu led the Phoenix offense with 11 kills against just two errors on 22 swings. Carlee Rogers contributed eight kills, 16 assists and nine digs, while Liberty Shadix delivered seven kills on a .500 hitting percentage to go with five digs and a team-high four blocks.

Carola Schnidrig added seven kills and nine digs, and Jacey Hubbell finished with five kills. Emma Chavers paced the setters with 20 assists, while Kaleigh Glass matched Rogers and Schnidrig with nine digs. Nisan Ozdogan accounted for both Cumberland service aces.

Cumberlands hit .333 with 36 kills and just six attack errors on 90 attempts. The Patriots collected 33 assists, 39 digs, eight blocks and six service aces.

Sara Zampedri led all players with 15 kills, adding eight digs while hitting .308. Brynnley Bryant finished with nine kills without an error on 18 attempts for a .500 clip and added nine digs. Savanah Jolly handed out 26 assists and served two aces, while Martina Frangella led the Patriots at the net with five blocks.

Cumberland erased an early 10-7 deficit in the opening set with five consecutive points. Abigail Foster started the run with a kill before Shadix and Schnidrig combined for a block, and an Ozdogan ace capped the stretch to put the Phoenix ahead 12-10.

The Phoenix maintained a narrow advantage through the middle of the set, getting kills from Shadix, Schnidrig and Guceanu to lead 16-14. Rogers later put Cumberland in front 18-17, but the Patriots answered with four straight points, including back-to-back Zampedri kills, to take a 21-18 lead. Schnidrig added two late kills, but Zampedri closed out the 25-21 decision.

Cumberland jumped ahead 5-2 in the second set behind kills from Guceanu, Foster and Schnidrig, a Shadix solo block and another Ozdogan ace. Cumberlands responded to tie the score at 5-5, and the teams traded points through a 12-12 deadlock.

The Patriots won five of the next six points to move ahead 17-13. Consecutive Guceanu kills pulled the Phoenix within two, and a Rogers finish kept Cumberland close at 18-16. Cumberlands took control from there, closing on a 7-1 run to claim the set 25-17 despite seven kills from Guceanu in the frame.

Back-to-back Shadix kills helped Cumberland build a 4-2 lead in the third set, and Rogers extended the advantage to 5-3. The Patriots responded with four consecutive points and eventually pushed their lead to 13-8.

Cumberland rallied with four straight points, using kills from Hubbell, Rogers and Schnidrig along with a Shadix-Schnidrig block to cut the deficit to 13-12. The Phoenix remained within two at 15-13 following another Hubbell kill, but Cumberlands answered with five unanswered points to stretch the margin to 20-13. The Patriots maintained control down the stretch to complete the sweep with a 25-16 victory.

The Phoenix will be back in action on Friday as Cumberland will travel to Georgetown for a 6:00 p.m. first serve.
