The Phoenix Head to No. 6 Cumberlands In A Ranked MSC Matchup

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- No. 22 Cumberland women's soccer hits the road Thursday for another ranked Mid-South Conference matchup, taking on No. 6 University of the Cumberlands at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex.

Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. as the Phoenix look to bounce back from a 3-2 setback against No. 19 Lindsey Wilson in their most recent match.

Cumberland enters Thursday's contest with a 10-3-1 overall record and a 3-1 mark in Mid-South Conference play. The Phoenix had won five straight matches before Friday's loss to the Blue Raiders and remain tied for first in the conference standings with nine points.

In their last outing the Phoenix built a 2-0 halftime advantage against Lindsey Wilson behind goals from Ruth Rodriguez and Victoria Collins, but the Blue Raiders rallied with three second-half goals to claim the victory. Sydney Eads made six saves in the contest, including five after halftime.

The Phoenix's attack has been outstanding, ranking among the conference's top offensive teams throughout the season, scoring 48 goals while producing 25 assists. The Phoenix have also generated 292 shots and 142 shots on goal, while the defense has recorded eight shutouts.

Collins continues to lead the Phoenix attack, ranking among the conference and national leaders with 13 goals and 29 points. Uxia Varela has added nine goals and 21 points.

Rodriguez has been a major contributor from the backline and on set pieces, recording six goals this season, all coming from dead-ball situations. Sophia Olivera has also helped drive the Phoenix attack from the back, leading the conference with five assists.

Sydney Eads has anchored the Phoenix defense in goal, allowing less than a goal per game while recording six shutouts. Eads currently has 49 saves with a 0.766 save percentage. The senior goalkeeper will be tested again Thursday against a Cumberlands side that enters the matchup ranked No. 6 nationally.

The Patriots enter Thursday at 5-2-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play after suffering a 4-0 loss at Campbellsville on Oct. 1. Despite the loss, Cumberlands outshot the Tigers 19-15 and put 10 shots on frame.

On offense the Patriots are led by Laura Bosca de Pedro who leads the Patriots with 4 goals, 4 assists and 12 points in 10 matches, supporting her has been Carmen Villa who also has 4 goals, along with one assist for nine points.

Morgan White has been the Patriots' primary goalkeeper. The sophomore has started eight games with 27 saves and a 0.771 save percentage. She has allowed eight goals for a 1.60 goals-against average and has been credited with four shutouts in those appearances.

Historically, the Phoenix have had the upper hand in the matchup, holding an 11-8-2 record against the University of the Cumberlands. Cumberland won last year's contest 2-1 at home and will look to continue that success on Thursday. However, this year's matchup carries added significance, as both teams enter the contest coming off difficult defeats and will be looking to bounce back and get back on track.

Thursday's matchup marks another significant test for the Phoenix as they continue their push toward the top of the Mid-South Conference standings.

Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
