Baskin Dominates Game One; St. Francis Responds with Game Two Win

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland used a four-run third inning and a strong start on the mound to secure a game one 7-2 victory over St. Francis (Ill.), but the Fighting Saints fought back to win game two with a heroic effort in the final frame to split the doubleheader.

Logan Baskin was dominant in his start in game one, tossing six shutout innings while allowing just three hits. The left-hander struck out five, walked one, and induced two double plays to earn the victory. Kyle Nyblod worked the final three innings to record the save, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out two.

Offensively, Cumberland finished with 10 hits. Caleb Royer led the way, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs. Wilser Then added a two-run homer and scored twice, while Gaines Haussin recorded two hits and scored two runs. Aiden McDonald chipped in with two hits and an RBI.

The Phoenix broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third and never looked back. Charlie Rocca drew a leadoff walk before Haussin ripped a double down the left field line. Rocca raced home on a misplay in left to put Cumberland on the board. Two batters later, Then launched a two-run homer to left center, extending the lead to 3-0. Royer followed with a solo shot to right, capping a four-run frame that gave the Phoenix early control.

Cumberland added to its lead in the sixth. Royer opened the inning with a double down the right field line and moved to third on a flyout before Aiden McDonald lined an RBI single through the left side to make it 5-0.

The Phoenix created more separation in the seventh. Haussin worked a walk and advanced to second on a groundout before Then drew a free pass. A passed ball moved both runners into scoring position, and Royer delivered again, singling to right field to plate two and push the advantage to 7-0.

St. Francis mounted its only threat in the ninth. A single and a double put two runners in scoring position before a two-run double down the left field line cut the deficit to 7-2. Cumberland closed the door from there to secure the win, but the Fighting Saints brought the momentum they got late into game two.

The Phoenix dropped a back-and-forth contest in game two to St. Francis falling 7-5 in seven innings despite jumping out to an early lead.

The Phoenix struck first in the opening frame. Haussin reached on an error and later stole second before advancing to third on a groundout. After a walk to Then, Royer blasted a three-run homer to center field to put Cumberland on top 3-0.

St. Francis responded in the third. After a leadoff triple and a walk, the Fighting Saints plated a run on a fielder's choice before adding another on an RBI single to even the score at 3-2. Cumberland answered immediately in the bottom half when Then launched a solo home run to center, pushing the lead back to 4-2, his second home run of the day.

Cumberland added to the lead in the fourth inning. Yuito Suzuki singled to lead off the inning. He was erased by a fielder's choice, but courtesy runner Wyatt Hurt came around to score on a RBI-single from Haussin for a 5-2 lead.

The Saints added two more in the fifth. A hit-by-pitch and single set the table before an RBI double trimmed the margin to one. A sacrifice fly followed to cut the score to 5-4.

However, St. Francis delivered the decisive blow in the seventh. After a walk and sacrifice bunt, the Saints used a sacrifice fly to tie the game before a two-run home run to right field flipped the contest in their favor at 7-5.

Cumberland finished with five hits, all going for extra bases. Royer and Then each homered, combining for four RBIs. Royer drove in three on his first-inning blast, while Then scored twice and added an RBI. Haussin also tallied an RBI, and Suzuki and Chris Meilan each recorded singles.

On the mound, Colson Smith worked the first three innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out two. Jaron Keyser tossed the final four innings and was tagged with the loss after surrendering five runs.

St. Francis totaled nine hits in the game, including two home runs, and capitalized late to secure the win.

Cumberland will take on St. Francis in game three tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. before closing out the weekend on Saturday against 11:00 a.m.
