Cumberland Explodes for Eight-Run Second in 10-7 Win Over St. Francis

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Baseball used an eight-run second inning to power past St. Francis 10-7 on Friday afternoon at Woody Hunt Stadium.

The Phoenix finished with 10 runs on 13 hits, including two home runs and one double, while striking out just four times. Gaines Haussin led the offensive charge, going 3-for-5 with a grand slam and four RBI. Cohl Proctor also delivered a big afternoon at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Wilser Then added two hits and an RBI, while Caleb Royer went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and one RBI, scoring twice.

Aiden McDonald continued his strong start to the season with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored, and Dylan LaRue reached base three times with a hit and two hit-by-pitches.

The Phoenix staff combined for 9.0 innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on five hits, while striking out nine. Carter Whitefield got the start and was sharp through four innings, allowing just two runs, both unearned, on three hits, striking out six without issuing a walk. Jordan Sheridan threw an inning in relief, allowing two runs. Kai Hanasaki worked an inning and allowed three runs. John Sullivan earned the win, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing no hits while striking out three. He navigated traffic with four walks but stranded every runner.

After both teams were held scoreless in the first, Cumberland erupted in the second inning.

The rally began with a leadoff single from McDonald and a hit-by-pitch to Cole Freeman. Charlie Rocca moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt, and Yuito Suzuki drew a walk to load the bases. With one out, Haussin launched a grand slam to left field to give the Phoenix a 4-0 lead, his first home run of the season.

The inning continued as LaRue was hit by pitch and pinch runner W. Hurt advanced on a wild pitch. Then singled to left to bring home Hurt and extend the lead to 5-0. Royer followed with a single, and Proctor doubled to left to score Then. After a pitching change, McDonald singled to center to score Royer, and Freeman grounded out to bring in Proctor, capping an eight-run inning and pushing Cumberland ahead 8-0.

St. Francis answered with two unearned runs in the third, but Cumberland added another run in the fourth as Royer belted his fifth home run of the season with a solo home run.

The Fighting Saints charged back with two runs in the fifth and added three more in the sixth to close the gap.

Sullivan entered in the seventh and kept St. Francis off the scoreboard to get the win. Cumberland added an insurance run in the eighth as Proctor had a two-out single to right to score Hurt for the 10-7 final score.

Cumberland and St. Francis will round out the series tomorrow with the final game at 11:00 a.m.
