Phoenix Explode for 20 Runs in Run-Rule Victory Over St. Francis

LEBANON, Tenn.--The Phoenix offense erupted for 20 runs on 29 hits as Cumberland rolled past St. Francis, 20-1, in seven innings to win the series.

Cumberland scored in every inning they came up to bat, including a five-run first and an eight-run third, overwhelming the Fighting Saints early and never looking back. The Phoenix improved to 6-3 on the season.

The Phoenix pounded out 29 hits, including five doubles, two triples and three home runs. Cumberland drove in all 20 runs. Cohl Proctor delivered a monster performance, going 4-for-4 with two home runs and six RBIs. Wilser Then finished 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored, reaching base in every plate appearance. Hobbs Dunne added three hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs while scoring twice. Gaines Haussin went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Dylan LaRue collected two hits, including a double, and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

On the mound, Cumberland limited St. Francis to just five hits and one run while striking out one and issuing no walks. Mateo Santos earned the win for Cumberland, tossing four innings while allowing four hits and one earned run. He did not issue a walk and threw just 40 pitches, 27 for strikes.

Noah Couch, Dom Guistino and Watson Storey combined for three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit over the final three frames to close out the run-rule victory.

After St. Francis threatened in the top of the first, Cumberland immediately seized control in the bottom half.

Haussin doubled down the left field line to open the inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly from LaRue. Then followed with a double, and after a walk to Caleb Royer, Proctor launched a three-run homer to left to give the Phoenix a quick 4-0 advantage. Cumberland added another run later in the inning to make it 5-0.

The Phoenix added one run in the second before breaking the game open in the third. Cumberland sent 13 batters to the plate in an eight-run frame. Dunne lead off the inning with his first home run of his career. Then tripled home a run and Proctor launched his second home run of the game. Later in the inning, Dunne singled home two more and Haussin single in one more.

St. Francis scored its only run in the fourth, but Cumberland answered with three more in the bottom half as Proctor singled in a run. Jordan Sheridan singled in a run and Yuito Suzuki hit a sacrifice fly.

The Phoenix tacked on two runs in the fifth on a Hunter Williams single and a JT Kelenic single and one more in the sixth as Hunter Blanton doubled home a run to cap the scoring at 20-1, sealing the seven-inning victory.

Cumberland will be back at home on Tuesday to host in-state rival Bryan College at 1:00 p.m.
