Croxford and Rauscher Shut Down Bulldogs in 14 Innings of One-Run Softball


LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland softball opened their season with a doubleheader against Tennessee Wesleyan and came away with a pair of victories Tuesday afternoon at Billy Dee Ross Stadium.

In game one, Madison Croxford tossed a complete-game four-hitter, and the Phoenix used timely hitting to secure a 3-1 win in the opener. Croxford was on top of the Bulldogs from start to finish, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out three across seven innings. She worked around four walks and stranded nine runners to earn her first win of the season, opening her senior campaign just about as good as possible.

Cumberland struck first in the bottom of the opening frame when Karley Daughrity drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position on a hard-hit double from Abby Chappell. Hailey Donato brought Daughrity home with a groundout to give the Phoenix a 1-0 advantage.

After Tennessee Wesleyan tied the game in the fifth on an RBI single, Cumberland answered immediately in the bottom half. Daughrity singled to spark the inning and Chappell followed with another base hit. An error allowed the go-ahead run to score before Sara Brogdon added an RBI single to stretch the lead to 3-1.

Taking their momentum into game two, the Phoenix leaned on another dominant performance in the circle and completed the sweep with a 3-0 shutout.

Avery Rauscher delivered a complete-game shutout in the nightcap, scattering six hits while striking out five. In her college softball debut the freshman was working it, stranding eight Tennessee Wesleyan runners and never allowing a run to cross.

Cumberland broke through in the third inning after Deshea Oakley reached on an error and was pushed across by Chappell's RBI single to left to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.
The Phoenix added two more in the fourth. Karsyn France and Elly Castle recorded back-to-back singles before a base hit from Pearl Davis loaded the bases. Oakley drew a walk to force in a run, and Daughrity followed with an RBI groundout to extend the advantage to 3-0.

Cumberland's pitching staff combined to allow just one run over 14 innings in the doubleheader, while the Phoenix improve to 2-0 on the season and will hit the road on Friday to take on Bryan College.
