Phoenix Stifled by Lions in Both Legs of Doubleheader

DAYTON, Tenn. - - Cumberland softball couldn't keep up their hot start as their efforts came up short in both ends of a doubleheader against the Bryan College Lions, falling 15-5 in game one and 1-0 in game two.

The Phoenix struck first in the opener and looked to build some early offensive rhythm, but a pair of big innings from Bryan proved fatal for Cumberland. Abby Chappell singled and later scored on a ringing double from Natalie Rector to give the Phoenix a 1-0 edge. Rector was outstanding at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

Bryan answered emphatically in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues and strung together nine hits in a 10-run third inning to flip a one-run deficit into a commanding lead.

The Phoenix refused to go quietly in the fourth, as Pearl Davis singled ahead of a towering two-run home run from Kennedy Scott to cut into the margin. Later in the inning, Rector delivered again with a two-run single, capping a four-run outburst that trimmed the deficit to 10-5.

Chappell and Hailey Donato each recorded two hits as Cumberland totaled 11 hits in the game, but Bryan responded with five more runs in the fourth to create separation. The Lions finished with 14 hits in the run-rule-shortened contest.

Game two evolved into a tightly contested pitcher's duel, with runs at a premium throughout. Avery Rauscher was sharp in the circle for Cumberland for her second game in a row, tossing a complete game while allowing just three hits and one earned run over six innings.

The Phoenix had their best opportunity to crack the egg in the fifth inning when Brogdon drew a walk, Castle was hit by a pitch, and Davis followed with another walk to load the bases with two outs. However, Bryan's Kayla Smith escaped the jam with a strikeout to preserve the scoreless tie.

Bryan scratched across the lone run in the sixth, taking advantage of two defensive errors to manufacture the go-ahead tally. Despite not surrendering an earned run beyond that frame, Cumberland's offense was stifled, as Smith tossed a no-hitter with seven strikeouts in the 1-0 final.

Cumberland will look to regroup offensively as they prepare for their next outing, taking on the University of Tennessee Southern tomorrow afternoon.
