Cumberland Drops Road Doubleheader to Unbeaten Tennessee Southern

PULASKI, Tenn –Cumberland softball fell in both games of a road doubleheader Saturday against unbeaten University of Tennessee Southern at Royce Hughes Field. The Phoenix dropped the opener 3-0 before falling 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap. With the losses, Cumberland moves to 2-4 on the season.

Cumberland battled in a tightly contested pitcher's duel through the first four innings, as Avery Rauscher kept Tennessee Southern off the scoreboard early. The Firehawks broke through in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Haley McDaniel to take a 1-0 lead.

Tennessee Southern tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth, with a two run RBI single to center field from Emory Hall to push the game to 3-0.

The Phoenix scattered three hits in the contest, with Elly Castle, Sara Brogdon, and Hailey Donato each recording one. Natalie Rector reached base twice via walks, but the Phoenix failed to push a run across despite drawing three free passes.

Rauscher (2-1) went 5.2 innings in the circle, allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out two.

The Firehawks carried their momentum into game two, scoring five runs in the second inning to seize control early. A RBI single from Laruen Pettie opened the scoring before Mikayla McCain delivered the big blow, a grand slam to right center, giving Tennessee Southern a 5-0 cushion.

In the fourth, Tennessee Southern added three more runs, highlighted by a two-run home run from Alaina Grace King and an RBI single by Kurstin Warrick.

Cumberland managed one hit in the shortened contest, coming off the bat of Natalie Rector. The Phoenix struck out five times and were limited offensively by Singletar, who tossed a complete-game shutout.
