Cumberland Drops Road Contest at No. 2 Freed-Hardeman

HENDERSON, Tenn.--Cumberland struggled to find offensive rhythm early and could not recover from a slow first quarter, falling to No. 2 Freed-Hardeman 79-48 in Mid-South Conference action Thursday evening at Brewer Sports Center.

The Lady Phoenix drop to 15-12 overall and 1-10 in conference play, while Freed-Hardeman improves to 24-3 and 9-3 in the MSC.

Cumberland shot 26.3 percent from the field and 29 percent from three while forcing nine steals. 

Schwallie and Tarpley led Cumberland with 10 points each. Schwallie added three steals and two rebounds, while Tarpley contributed five rebounds and drew nine fouls. Walker finished with eight points, and Long added seven points off the bench. Colston recorded six rebounds and a three-pointer, while Buckley contributed six points and four rebounds.

Freed-Hardeman shot an efficient 52.8 percent from the floor and held a 37-26 rebounding advantage.

Freed-Hardeman was led by Jenna Satterly with 24 points, while Ally Weathers added 21 points and six rebounds.Brooklyn Crouch added 11 points and Rachel Satterly added nine. The Lady Lions had just six points off the bench. 

Freed-Hardeman set the tone immediately, opening the game on an 11-3 run behind efficient shooting and forcing multiple Cumberland turnovers. Sydney Schwallie connected on a three-pointer midway through the opening quarter to briefly slow the momentum, and Ty Buckley added a three late in the period, but the Lady Lions answered with a strong finish, including a jumper and transition three from Jenna Satterly to take a commanding 22-8 lead after one quarter.

The Phoenix battled in the second quarter, finding points from Riley Long and Ever Walker while Schwallie knocked down a pull-up jumper and another three to keep Cumberland within striking distance. Walker added a driving layup and another three-pointer during the stretch, but Freed-Hardeman consistently responded, pushing the lead to 38-20 at halftime behind strong interior play and transition scoring.

Cumberland showed its best offensive stretch in the third quarter, scoring 21 points and matching Freed-Hardeman shot-for-shot. Faith Colston knocked down a three early in the period, Emaleigh Tarpley converted a layup and three-point play, and Schwallie added a fast-break jumper and another three to spark the offense. Long also contributed inside with a basket and free throw as the Phoenix trimmed into the deficit, but Freed-Hardeman capitalized at the free-throw line and responded with timely baskets to maintain a 58-41 advantage entering the fourth.

The Phoenix struggled to generate offense in the final quarter, going scoreless from the field while relying on free throws for their only points. Freed-Hardeman closed the game with efficient shooting and strong rebounding to seal the 79-48 victory.

Cumberland returns to action Saturday for Senior Day as the Phoenix close out the regular season against Bethel.
