No. 12 Missouri Baptist Outlasts Cumberland in Two Tight Contests

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland went toe-to-toe with No. 12 Missouri Baptist all afternoon, but the Spartans capitalized on early momentum in game one and late execution in game two to sweep Friday's doubleheader, edging the Phoenix 5-4 before claiming a 6-4 extra-inning victory at Woody Hunt Stadium.

Cumberland battled back from an early deficit but came up just short in a 5-4 loss to Missouri Baptist on Friday morning at home.

Caleb Royer had a big game in the first game of the double header popping two home runs. He finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Aiden McDonald added two hits and two RBI, while Jordan Sheridan reached base four times with two hits, including a double, and two walks. Cumberland outhit Missouri Baptist 10-8 but left nine runners on base including the bases loaded twice.

Logan Baskin (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits over five innings while striking out seven. Colson Smith provided two scoreless innings of relief, giving up just two hits and striking out one to keep the Phoenix within striking distance late.

Missouri Baptist collected eight hits and scored five including three runs in the first. Griffin Brown collected two hits and a solo home run and Angelo Franco drove in two runs.

Teague Robertson (2-0) went 4.1 innings giving up three runs on seven hits only striking out two. JD Whittier threw 1.2 to close the gap to the closer without allowing a run. Zach Peters earned his third save of the year allowing one run on Royer's homer.

Missouri Baptist struck quickly in the opening frame, stringing together three hits to plate three runs. An RBI single from Nick Beech opened the scoring before Franco delivered a two-run double down the left-field line to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead after one.

Cumberland answered in the third. Caleb Royer singled to right-center and moved into scoring position before a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to McDonald forced in a run, trimming the deficit to 3-1.

The Spartans added a solo home run in the fourth from Brown and capitalized on a two-out error in the fifth to push their lead to 5-1.

The Phoenix offense came alive in the bottom of the fifth. Royer blasted a solo home run to right field, his first of two long balls on the day, before McDonald drove in a run with a single to left to make it 5-3.

Royer continued his big afternoon in the seventh, launching his second solo homer to right to pull Cumberland within one at 5-4. Cumberland put a runner on, but Peters shut the door for the save and the Spartans win.

Game two was a pitcher's duel until things got crazy late, but Missouri Baptist plated two runs in the 10th inning to hand the Phoenix a 6-4 extra-inning loss in game two.

Missouri Baptist finished with 17 hits and left 13 runners on base, breaking a 4-4 tie with a two-run frame in the top of the 10th.
The Phoenix matched Missouri Baptist early and stayed within striking distance throughout. Cumberland pushed across a run in the third inning and added another in the seventh to keep pace before scoring twice in the ninth to even the game at 4-4 and force extras.

Gaines Haussin led the way offensively, going 2-for-5 with a home run and a double while driving in one. Dylan LaRue added a pair of hits and an RBI, while Camden Williamson doubled and scored twice. Cumberland totaled 10 hits, including three doubles and a home run.

On the mound, Marcos Santos turned in a strong start, tossing 7.0 innings while allowing four runs on 13 hits with 61 strikes in 97 pitches. Kyle Nyblod provided relief, and Noah Couch was tagged with the loss after Missouri Baptist's two-run 10th inning. Cumberland struck out seven as a staff but was hurt by three defensive errors in the contest.

Missouri Baptist's offense was paced by a three-RBI performance from Griffin Brown, while Kai Gray and Carlos Hidalgo each recorded multi-hit outings.

Missouri Baptist scored the first run of the game on a balk in the third inning. Cumberland answered as LaRue roped a double to score Williamson.

After four quiet innings, Haussin broke the tie with a line drive home run to right field. The Spartans took the lead in the ninth as CU looked to close the game out. Brown ripped a two-run home run and Jayden Orozco singled in one more for a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom half, pinch hitter Jordan Sheridan singled through the right side to spark the rally. Williamson hit a double to put runners on second and third. Down to Cumberland's final out, LaRue hit a fly ball to center that was dropped to score two runs and tie the game.

Missouri Baptist brought in two runs in the 10th. Gray hit a triple to single to plate one and then a safety squeeze that turned into a base hit scored the other for the 6-4 final score.

Cumberland and Missouri Baptist will wrap up the series tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. with a single game.
