Tennis Takes Pair of Wins from Indiana Wesleyan in Pulaski

PULASKI, Tenn. - - The Cumberland men's and women's tennis teams both took wins over Indiana Wesleyan yesterday afternoon, taking down the Wildcats 4-1 and 4-2, respectively.

It was another ranked matchup for the women's tennis team, taking on the team ranked one spot ahead of them in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll.

The women's tennis team won the doubles point with a 2-0 clinch in their three matches, but were close to getting a full sweep. Juanita and Valentina Mendez won 6-2 on court two, while Asya Tilsim Timur and Madeleine Darud won 6-2 on court three. Maria Arbelaez and Elina Sungatullina were in a great match on court one, up 5-4, though it was not played to completion.

Timur carried her momentum over into singles play where she won in straight sets, 6-2, 5-7, on court two. One spot behind her was Arbelaez who picked up the third point of the day for Cumberland, winning 6-3, 6-3.

The crucial third singles win came at number five, where Sungatullina won in a third set tiebreak. The Russian fell behind early, losing 6-0 in her first set, but came back strong to win her second set and the tiebreak, 6-1, 13-11.

Valentina Mendez fell 6-2, 6-1 at the number one spot, while Juanita Mendez fell in a third set tiebreaker, 6-3, 2-6, 3-10. Ame Van Eijk was on pace to win her match though it was finished as a DNF, 6-1, 5-1.

The men's tennis team also competed just after the women, pulling out a 4-1 win over the Wildcats.

Arthur Fernandes and Arne Sohmer took the win at two doubles, 6-4, and Mateus Mori and Mohamed Bouhlel sealed the point with a 6-2 victory on court three. Matheus Guarnieri and Carlos Morillas dropped their match at one doubles, 6-2.

Cumberland then would go on to win swiftly in singles action, picking up wins on courts two, three, and five. Bouhlel patrolled at the second spot and won in a third set tiebreak thriller, 4-6, 6-4, 15-13. On court three Arthur Fernandes won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Getting the win for Cumberland, Mateus Mori won on court five, 6-3, 6-0. Carlos Morillas was the only other match to finish, falling 6-4, 6-0, on court one. Arne sohmer was in his second set, up 7-5, 1-0, while Magnus Johansen was behind 6-3, 1-0.

Cumberland will now have a quick turnaround as they host conference rivals Campbellsville this afternoon for their first home match of the season.
