Baseball Splits Season Opener with Pikeville

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Baseball jumped out with a game one win before Pikeville responded in game two to split the 2026 opening day doubleheader.

Cumberland opened up game one with a 7-3 behind five first inning runs. Cumberland finished with 13 hits on the day, led by Gabriel Reyes, who went 3-for-3 with a double, RBI, and a run scored. Dylan LaRue and Caleb Royer each homered, while Gaines Haussin collected two hits and drove in a pair. Cole Freeman and Aiden McDonald also recorded RBIs in the opening-frame surge.

The Phoenix wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first to take control. Dylan LaRue led off the season with a solo home run, setting the tone as Cumberland sent 10 batters to the plate. RBI singles from Freeman,  McDonald, and Reyes, along with a run-scoring hit from Haussin, helped Cumberland build an early cushion.

Cumberland added to the lead in the second when Royer launched a solo home run to right, making it 6-0 through two innings. The Phoenix tacked on their final run in the fifth, as Haussin delivered his second RBI of the game with a single to center to score Reyes.

On the mound, Logan Baskin earned the start and set the tone, working four scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out five. Baskin worked out of traffic throughout his outing, helped by a defense that turned double plays and cut down multiple runners on the bases. Lucas Frank picked up the win in relief, tossing two shutout innings, while Kai Hanasaki and John Sullivan helped close out the contest.

Pikeville pushed across two runs in the seventh and added one more in the ninth, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome as the Phoenix pitching staff limited the Bears to seven hits in game one.

Pikeville responded in game two as CU dropped the second game of the season-opening doubleheader falling 7-2 to Pikeville.

The Bears struck first with a four-run second inning, taking advantage of traffic on the bases and a pair of defensive miscues to build an early lead. Gledhill singled home the first run of the game before a two-RBI single from Mould. One more run came across after an error.

Cumberland answered in the bottom of the fourth, breaking through with two runs. Royer led off the inning with a solo home run to left-center, his second long ball of the day, before the Phoenix loaded the bases. Camden Williamson drew a walk to force in a run, trimming the deficit to 4-2.

Pikeville added three more runs in the sixth to push the lead to 7–0, capitalizing on a two-run single up the middle and a sacrifice fly.

The Phoenix finished with eight hits in the contest, led by Royer and LaRue, who each went 2-for-4. Yuito Suzuki also collected a pair of hits, while Wilser Then reached base twice and scored a run.

On the mound, Colson Smith took the loss after allowing four runs over three innings of work. Watson Storey provided three innings of relief, while Ty Spencer worked a clean seventh to close out the game.

Despite multiple opportunities, Cumberland was unable to string together hits late, leaving eight runners on base as Pikeville pitching held the Phoenix scoreless over the final three innings.

The Phoenix and Bears will meet tomorrow for game three and game four of the series starting at 11:00 a.m.
