Softball Opens Conference Play With 3-1 Victory over Freed-Hardeman

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland softball opened its conference season with a matchup against Freed-Hardeman, winning 3-1 as Avery Rauscher pitched another gem.

The Phoenix struck first in the bottom of the opening inning after Karley Daughrity was hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position on wild pitches. Three-hole hitter Elly Castle brought her home with an RBI groundout to give Cumberland the early 1-0 lead.

Freed-Hardeman answered in the third inning, stringing together three hits to tie the game. Lions centerfielder Karli Quillin singled and later scored on an RBI single from LuLu White to even the contest at 1-1.

Cumberland quickly regained control in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back. Daughrity worked a two-out walk before Hailey Donato delivered a clutch double down the left-field line, scoring Daughrity and pushing Cumberland back in front 2-1.

Both pitchers settled in through the middle innings before Cumberland added an insurance run in the sixth. Natalie Rector singled to start the inning and was replaced by pinch runner Deshea Oakley, who later scored when Abby Chappell ripped an RBI double to right-center to extend the lead to 3-1.

Rauscher handled the rest from there as the right-hander tossed a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits while working around three walks to earn the win in the circle.

Donato and Chappell each recorded an RBI for the Phoenix, while Rector and Donato accounted for two of Cumberland's three hits. Daughrity reached base twice and scored two of the team's three runs.

The Phoenix will be back out at Billy Dee Ross Stadium tomorrow afternoon for doubleheader against the same Lions team, starting at 12PM.
