Lions Take DH from Phoenix to Win Season Series

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland softball dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader to Freed-Hardeman at Billy Dee Ross Stadium, falling 2-0 in game one before a late rally came up short in a 10-7 loss in game two.

Freed-Hardeman broke through in the fourth inning and held Cumberland to just three hits to claim the opening game 2-0. The Lions scored the game's first run on a solo home run by Myleah Hardy in the top of the fourth before adding an insurance run in the sixth inning on an RBI single.

Cumberland struggled to generate offense against Katy Gartrell, who struck out 13 batters while allowing only three hits in the complete-game shutout. Elly Castle accounted for two of Cumberland's three hits in the game, while Sara Brogdon recorded the other. Madison Croxford pitched all seven innings for the Phoenix, allowing two runs on ten hits.

Freed-Hardeman used a big fourth inning to take control in game two before holding off a late Cumberland rally to secure the sweep.

The Lions plated seven runs in the fourth inning, turning a 3-3 tie into a 10-3 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double from pitcher Hannah Jones and a two-run double from Myleah Hardy.

Cumberland battled back in the final inning, scoring four runs to trim the deficit and give themselves a chance to fight back into it. Hailey Donato kicked off the inning with a double to left center field and Elly Castle singled to put runners on the corners.

Natalie Rector then worked a nine-pitch AB into a walk to load the bases for Abby Chappell. The shortstop delivered a two-run double down the line, her second double of the game, while Karsyn France added an RBI single during the rally.

Capping off the four-run rally in the final frame, Emily Seavers walked to load the bases and Deshea Oakley shot a ball over to short where the Lions would commit their fourth error, allowing Sara Brogdon to score the seventh and final run of the game.

Karley Daughrity and Elly Castle each recorded two hits for the Phoenix, while Chappell drove in three runs. Avery Rauscher provided relief in the circle, allowing just two runs over four innings after entering in the fourth for Madison Lancaster.

The Phoenix will have the MSC bye next week and then will host Georgia Gwinnett for a midweek doubleheader, starting at 12PM on March 25th.
