Phoenix Walk It Off, Rally Late to Sweep Georgia Gwinnett

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland Softball delivered a thrilling day at Billy Dee Ross Stadium on Wednesday, earning a double header sweep with RV Georgia Gwinnett by walking off game one, 3-2, before rallying for a 6-5 victory in game two.

Game one was a tightly contested pitcher's duel highlighted by a dominant performance from Avery Rauscher in the circle.

Cumberland struck first in the second inning when Deshea Oakley delivered an RBI single to score Abby Chappell and give the Phoenix an early 1-0 lead. Rauscher kept Georgia Gwinnett off balance throughout the afternoon, limiting scoring opportunities and working efficiently through the lineup.

The Grizzlies broke through in the seventh inning, scoring twice to take a 2-1 lead and put Cumberland in a late deficit. However, the Phoenix responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Elly Castle drove in the tying run with a ground out to even the score at 2-2 and send the game to extra innings.

After Rauscher shut the door in the top of the ninth. The Phoenix would get a chance to walk off the Grizzlies in the Ninth inning. Kennedy Scott reached base and came around to score on a clutch RBI single from Karley Daughrity, sealing the 3-2 walk off victory.

Rauscher earned the complete-game win, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out five.

Georgia Gwinnett came out strong in game two, building an early 4-0 lead with two runs in each of the first two innings.

The Phoenix began to chip away in the second inning when Deshea Oakley drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Natalie Rector. Cumberland then flipped the game in the third inning with its most explosive frame of the day.

Abby Chappell started the rally with an RBI single before Karsyn France delivered the biggest hit of the game, a grand slam to left field, giving the Phoenix a 6-4 advantage.

Georgia Gwinnett added one run in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 6-5, but the Phoenix pitching held strong down the stretch. Madison Croxford was outstanding in relief, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing just one run to secure the win.

The Phoenix will be on the road Friday and Saturday as they will face Mid-South Conference foe Bethel University for a three game series. The series will be played at Lady Wildcat Park in McKenzie, Tennessee. You can pay to watch the Phoenix on Hudl or through live stats.
