No. 6 Cumberlands Sweeps Series in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.--Sixth-ranked Patriots take two on Saturday to sweep the Mid-South Conference series over the Phoenix.

Cumberland erupted for 13 runs and blasted four home runs, but a late eight-run sixth inning from No. 6 Cumberlands proved to be the difference as the Phoenix fell 16-13 game one.

The Phoenix offense collected 12 hits and launched four home runs in the high-scoring affair. Gaines Haussin led the charge with a 3-for-5 performance that included a double and an RBI while scoring twice. Dylan LaRue finished 2-for-5 with a triple and a two-run home run, while Aiden McDonald also went 2-for-5 with a solo homer and two runs scored. Caleb Royer added a three-run blast and three RBIs, and Wilser Then delivered a two-run homer as Cumberland produced 12 RBIs in the contest.

On the mound, Cumberland used five pitchers in the game. Mateo Santos made the start, working two innings while allowing five runs on seven hits. Jaron Keyser followed with two innings of relief, surrendering three runs. Kyle Nyblod was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs in 1.1 innings. Dom Guistino and Noah Couch combined to finish the game in relief.

Cumberlands matched Cumberland with 12 hits of their own and used timely power to surge ahead late. Derick Andiarena led the Patriots offense with three hits and three RBIs, including a two-run home run. Justin Veloz delivered the biggest swing of the game, blasting a grand slam as part of a four-RBI day. Johnboy Rittenhouse added a three-run homer, while Dariel Castillo and Pedro Vasquez each recorded extra-base hits in the victory.

On the mound, the Patriots pieced together the win with four pitchers. Nolan Wilson started and allowed three runs in two innings before Brayden Stewart surrendered five runs over 2.1 innings. Jaden Morris tossed 1.1 innings before JD Price closed the game to earn the victory.

Cumberland struck first in the opening inning when LaRue tripled and later scored on a fielding error to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead. The Phoenix added two more in the second as Gabriel Reyes drove in a run with a single and Haussin followed with an RBI double to make it 3-0.

The Patriots responded in the second and third innings, tying the game on a two-run single by Veloz before Rittenhouse launched a three-run homer in the third to put Cumberlands ahead 6-3. Another two-run homer from Andiarena in the fourth extended the lead to 8-3.

Cumberland answered in a big way in the fifth. Royer crushed a three-run home run to right field and Reyes later delivered a two-run single to tie the game at 8-8. The Phoenix kept the momentum in the sixth as McDonald and Then launched back-to-back homers to give Cumberland an 11-8 advantage.

Cumberlands answered with the decisive rally in the bottom of the sixth, capitalizing on walks and defensive miscues before Veloz cleared the bases with a grand slam to cap an eight-run inning and put the Patriots ahead 16-11.

The Phoenix continued to battle in the seventh as LaRue blasted a two-run homer to trim the deficit to 16-13, but Cumberland could not complete the comeback in game two of the series.

Cumberland received a strong start on the mound in game three, but a late offensive surge from No. 6 Cumberlands pushed the Patriots past the Phoenix 11-1 in the series finale.

The Phoenix collected seven hits in the contest, led by Aiden McDonald who finished 2-for-4 with the lone RBI. Gaines Haussin, Dylan LaRue, Caleb Royer, Cohl Proctor, and Camden Williamson each added a hit as Cumberland threatened in several innings but left five runners stranded.

Carter Whitefield turned in a strong start for the Phoenix, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and striking out five. Colson Smith took the loss after allowing eight runs in 1.2 innings of relief, while Kyle Niebow worked the final inning on the mound.

Cumberlands finished with 17 hits and was led by Derick Andiarena, who went 4-for-5 with a home run and six RBIs to power the Patriots offense. Ronald Almanzar and Pedro Vasquez also homered, while Dariel Castillo and Justin Veloz each recorded multi-hit performances.

The game remained scoreless through the first five innings as Whitefield and Patriots starter Stuart Tharle matched zeros. Cumberland broke through in the sixth inning when LaRue singled and later scored on an RBI single from McDonald to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.

The Patriots responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning. Castillo delivered an RBI single to tie the game before Andiarena launched a three-run home run to left-center field to give Cumberlands a 4-1 advantage.

Cumberlands extended the lead in the seventh inning with five runs, highlighted by a two-run homer from Vasquez and a two-run blast from Almanzar. The Patriots added two more runs in the eighth on another RBI single from Andiarena to seal the 11-1 victory.

The Phoenix will look to bounce back in their next outing on Wednesday as CU travels to Tennessee Wesleyan.
