Baseball Falls to No. 9 Tennessee Wesleyan Despite Late Push

ATHENS, Tenn.--Cumberland baseball fell on the road Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 16-6 decision to No. 9 Tennessee Wesleyan despite a late push.

The Phoenix collected 10 hits in the contest, with Gabriel Reyes leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance that included a double. Dylan LaRue added a pair of hits, including a double, while Aiden McDonald finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cohl Proctor provided the biggest swing of the day, launching a three-run home run as part of a 2-for-4 outing with three RBIs.

Cumberland used 10 pitchers in the outing as Kyle Nyblod got the start. Kyle Niebow and Noah Couch highlighting the effort. Niebow tossed 1.1 scoreless innings without allowing a hit, while Couch added a scoreless frame with two strikeouts. As a staff, the Phoenix allowed 16 runs on 12 hits with seven walks and three hit batsmen. 

Tennessee Wesleyan struck first in the opening inning, using a sacrifice fly and a two-run single from Hagen Escoto to jump out to a 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs added to their advantage in the third with another sacrifice fly before breaking the game open in the fourth inning. Wesleyan plated five runs in the frame, highlighted by RBI singles from David Ballenilla and Allan Gil Fernandez along with multiple sacrifice flies, extending the lead to 9-0.

Wesleyan continued to add on in the sixth inning, scoring three more runs behind timely hitting, including an RBI single and sacrifice fly to push the lead to 12-0.

Cumberland showed life in the seventh inning, erupting for six runs. The first run came across on an RBI fielder's choice from McDonald. A couple batters later, Proctor delivered the big blow with a three-run home run. Cumberland plated two more on a two-out error to cut the lead in half trailing 12-6.

However, Tennessee Wesleyan answered immediately in the bottom half with four runs to close out the 16-6 final.

The Phoenix will be back at home this weekend for a conference series against Lindsey Wilson. Cumberland will host the Blue Raiders with one game on Friday and two on Saturday.
