Late Surge Lifts Lindsey Wilson Past Cumberland in the Opener

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Baseball dropped the series opener on Friday afternoon as Lindsey Wilson used a four-run ninth inning to pull away for a 9-5 victory at Woody Hunt Stadium.

The Phoenix (12-15) erased an early deficit with a four-run fifth inning and took a 5-3 lead into the late innings, but Lindsey Wilson (10-15) answered with a run in the seventh before breaking the game open in the ninth.

Cumberland's offense came alive in the fifth inning after being held scoreless through the first four frames. Following a hit-by-pitch and stolen base by Wyatt Hurt, Aiden McDonald drove in the Phoenix's first run with a single. Caleb Royer followed with an RBI double to cut the deficit to one before Gabriel Reyes delivered the big swing of the inning, launching a two-run home run to right field to give Cumberland a 4-3 advantage.

The Phoenix added to their lead in the sixth inning when JT Kelenic connected on a solo home run to left field, extending the margin to 5-3.

Lindsey Wilson chipped away in the seventh inning, using a two-out RBI single from Orion Hahm-Taklender to make it a one-run game.

The Blue Raiders tied the game in the eighth inning. With two runners on and two outs, Lindsey Wilson stole second and third, LaRue tried throwing the runner out at second, however, the throw got away allowing the tying run to score.

The Blue Raiders then capitalized in the ninth, scoring four runs on four hits to regain the lead and create separation late. Lindsey put the first two batters on base and then bunted them to second and third. Cumberland intentionally walked to load the bases, but Andres Duran answered with a two-RBi single up the middle. Diego Andino and Keith Stewart added RBI knocks to push the score out to 9-5.

On the mound, Logan Baskin turned in a strong start for Cumberland, tossing 6.0 innings while allowing three runs on six hits and striking out six. Jaron Keyser (0-3) was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs over 2.0 innings of relief, while Colson Smith allowed three runs in the ninth.

Offensively, Cumberland totaled nine hits in the contest. Reyes led the way with two hits and two RBIs, while McDonald and Charlie Rocca each recorded two-hit performances. Royer added a double and RBI, and Kelenic's solo home run highlighted the Phoenix's power at the plate.

Lindsey Wilson was paced by Keith Stewart, who went 3-for-4 with a home run, double, and three RBIs, while Drake Young also homered in the win.

Cumberland will look to bounce back as the series continues at Woody Hunt Stadium.
