Santos Tosses Gem, but Blue Raiders Take Series with Late Lift in the Finale

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland Baseball split Saturday's doubleheader against Lindsey Wilson, using a dominant shutout performance in game one before falling in the nightcap, dropping the Mid-South Conference series at Woody Hunt Stadium.

Cumberland opened the day with a complete performance, riding a strong offensive showing and a dominant outing on the mound from Mateo Santos.

Caleb Royer led the offensive attack, finishing 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and two RBIs, while Gabriel Reyes drove in three runs. JT Kelenic added two RBIs on his third-inning blast, and Aiden McDonald scored twice.

On the mound, Santos was in complete control, tossing a four-hit shutout while striking out six over seven innings to improve to 4-1 on the season. He worked efficiently throughout, stranding multiple Lindsey Wilson threats and never allowing a run to cross in his first shutout of the season.

Cumberland set the tone immediately in the bottom of the first inning, stringing together quality at-bats to jump in front early. Dylan LaRue sparked the offense with a single to right before McDonald followed with a walk. Royer laced an RBI double to right field to bring home the game's first run. Reyes continued the rally with a two-run single up the middle, giving the Phoenix a quick 3-0 advantage.

After Mateo Santos worked around traffic in the third inning, stranding runners at second and third, the Phoenix offense delivered the knockout punch in the bottom half. McDonald was hit by a pitch to start the inning and later moved to third, allowing Reyes to tack on another run with a sacrifice fly. The inning continued to unravel for Lindsey Wilson as Cohl Proctor was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a throwing error. Moments later, JT Kelenic crushed a two-run home run to center field, pushing the lead to 7-0.

Cumberland added a run in the fourth as Royer belted a solo shot and another in the fifth as Proctor came around to score on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 9-0.

Cumberland jumped out to an early lead in game two but could not hold off a late Lindsey Wilson surge as the Blue Raiders scored eight unanswered runs to secure the split.

McDonald led Cumberland offensively with two RBIs, while LaRue and Camden Williamson each collected two hits. Gaines Haussin added a double and scored a run.

Carter Whitefield turned in a solid start, allowing three runs over six innings with five strikeouts, but the bullpen was unable to contain the Lindsey Wilson offense late.

Cumberland once again came out aggressive offensively, striking in the bottom of the first inning. Haussin opened the frame with a double to center field, and LaRue followed with a base hit to put runners in scoring position. McDonald ripped a double down the left field line to score both runners and give the Phoenix an early 2-0 lead.

The game settled into a pitcher's duel over the next several innings as Whitefield kept Lindsey Wilson off balance. The Blue Raiders were held scoreless through five innings before breaking through in the sixth. After a leadoff single and a hit-by-pitch put runners aboard, Lindsey Wilson capitalized with a two-out, three-run home run from Caden Davis to take a 3-2 lead.

Cumberland remained within striking distance heading into the late innings, but Lindsey Wilson exploded for five runs in the the eighth. Lindsey Wilson loaded the bases and Davis again delivered a three-run double to extend the lead before adding two more runs in the inning, stretching the advantage to 8-2.

The Phoenix attempted a late push in the ninth inning, putting together a rally with two runs on multiple hits to cut into the deficit. However, Lindsey Wilson was able to close out the game with tying run at the plate.

Cumberland will be back in action at home on Tuesday as CU host RV Milligan. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
