Flag Football Drops Two Games on Saturday

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn.--Cumberland flag football dropped both contests of its Saturday tri-match at Milligan University, falling 55-0 to Milligan before battling late but coming up short in a 32-19 loss to Reinhardt. The Phoenix moved the ball effectively through the air in both games, combining for 459 passing yards on the day, but were unable to overcome early deficits in each contest.

Game One vs. Milligan

Milligan set the tone early, marching down the field on its opening possession before finding the end zone to take the early lead. Cumberland's first drive stalled deep in its own territory, and the Buffaloes quickly capitalized with another touchdown pass from Bridget Keyser to extend the advantage. A turnover later in the quarter led to another Milligan score as the Buffaloes built a 20-0 lead by the end of the opening period.

The Buffaloes continued to build momentum in the second quarter as Keyser connected with Ashton Whearley for another touchdown early in the frame. The Phoenix offense showed flashes behind quarterback Madison Woodard, but sacks and negative plays prevented Cumberland from sustaining drives. Milligan added two more scores before halftime, including a defensive touchdown following a turnover, sending the Buffaloes into the break with a commanding 40-0 lead.

Cumberland opened the second half looking to find rhythm offensively but struggled to move the ball against a relentless Milligan defense. The Buffaloes struck again midway through the third quarter when Keyser found Whearley in the end zone for another touchdown, extending the lead to 46-0.

Milligan added to its lead early in the fourth after a safety pushed the margin to 49-0. The Buffaloes later capped the scoring with a rushing touchdown from Whearley with just over three minutes remaining to secure the 55-0 final.

Woodard finished 24-of-39 passing for 166 yards in the contest. Marley Hyde led the Phoenix receiving corps with 12 catches for 82 yards, while Je'Leah Cole added six receptions for 49 yards. Defensively, Ava Hourigan, Brianna Taylor, and Macy Fowler each recorded three tackles to pace the Phoenix.

Game Two vs. Reinhardt

Cumberland rebounded with a strong start in the second game of the day against Reinhardt. The Phoenix opened the contest with a 10-play, 66-yard drive to take an early 6-0 lead. Reinhardt responded later in the quarter as Alexus Wilson connected with Tatianna Allicock on a 35-yard touchdown pass to even the score at 6-6.

Reinhardt took control in the second quarter, capitalizing on field position to score on a two-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to Kamari Tansiel. The Eagles added another score late in the half to extend the lead to 20-6 at the break as Cumberland struggled to finish drives deep in Reinhardt territory.

The Phoenix responded after halftime by forcing a turnover deep in Reinhardt territory and quickly converting the opportunity into points to cut the deficit to 20-12. Reinhardt answered later in the quarter with another quick scoring play to push the advantage to 26-12. The period featured several turnovers from both teams as defenses created opportunities throughout the frame.

Cumberland continued to fight in the fourth quarter and trimmed the deficit to 26-19 after forcing another turnover and capitalizing with a touchdown drive. The Phoenix defense delivered key stops to keep the game within reach, but Reinhardt sealed the win in the closing minute when Wilson capped a 76-yard drive with a 10-yard rushing touchdown to make the final 32-19.

Woodard led the Phoenix offense in the second game, completing 29-of-48 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns, but threw two interceptions. Marley Hyde hauled in six catches for 45 yards and both Cumberland touchdowns, while Trinity Ryan recorded eight receptions for 65 yards and CallieAnna Griggs added 64 receiving yards.

Defensively, Avery Conger paced the Phoenix with seven tackles and a pick-six, while Josilyn Diaz recorded four sacks. Dyna'C Davis, Jada Starnes, and Khira Johnson each added interceptions for the Cumberland defense.

The Phoenix will return to action Tuesday when they host a tri-match against Illinois Wesleyan and Milligan.
