Flag Football Take One from Illinois Wesleyan in Midweek Trimatch

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland welcomed in the Illinois Wesleyan Titans and Milligan Buffaloes for a trimatch at Nokes Lasater field, going one and one on the day.

In game one of the day the Phoenix took on the Illinois side and from the start CU looked confident. The two teams traded possession back and forth to start the game before eventually Madison Woodard found her favorite target for the first score of the game. Falling all the way to third and 16, it looked like Cumberland had their backs against the wall but after a long gain from Jessie Young on that third down, Woodard then found Hyde in the back of the endzone on fourth down to make it 6-0.

The Phoenix and Titans both struggled to get the offense going in the second quarter, but it was special teams for the home side who was able to get things going again. Jada Starnes took her punt return back from just outside the final zone, a full 25 yards into the endzone to give Cumberland a 12-0 going into the final moments of the first half.

That wasn't it for the Phoenix however as Marley Hyde and Madison Woodard connected again for the third and final touchdown of the first half, going ahead 18-0 with 22 seconds left in the first half. The game continued all in the Phoenix's favor as Gabby Orsi put another six points on the board in the fourth quarter, extending Cumberland's lead out even further.

The home side kept pouring it on the Titans as the DII side struggled to get any offense going, tacking on six more points less than a minute later with a receiving touchdown on the first play of the drive, coming from Trinity Ryan. On the very first play of the next drive CU picked another pass off, marking their third of the day.

Cumberland converted that drive into more points, going ahead of Wesleyan 37-0. The Phoenix defense never let up, completely shutting down the Titans' offense and forcing mistake after mistake throughout the second half. Illinois Wesleyan was held to just 137 total yards and turned the ball over three times, all via interceptions, as Cumberland controlled the game from start to finish on both sides of the ball.

Madison Woodard led the way offensively with a stellar performance, going 23-for-43 through the air for 227 yards and five touchdowns without an interception. Trinity Ryan was her top target, hauling in seven receptions for 78 yards and a score, while Marley Hyde added six catches for 53 yards and two touchdowns. CallieAnna Griggs also contributed with a touchdown reception and 39 receiving yards, and Gabby Orsi added a score of her own.

In the second game of the day, Cumberland ran into a tough Milligan side for the second time in three days, falling 53-0 in the nightcap. The Buffaloes jumped out early and never looked back, capitalizing on turnovers and big plays to control the game throughout.

The Phoenix struggled to find rhythm offensively, totaling just 142 yards while turning the ball over four times, as Milligan's passing attack proved too much to overcome. Cumberland will be back on the road this weekend, taking on Mars Hill and Winston-Salem this Friday in North Carolina.
