Flag Football Dominates in North Carolina Doubleheader

MARS HILL, N.C.. - - The Cumberland flag football jumped all over a pair of teams from North Carolina this afternoon, taking down Mars Hill and Winston-Salem by a combined score of 100-7.

It was a massively offensive day for Cumberland as they dominated game one from start to finish, cruising to a 49-7 victory over Winston-Salem.

The Phoenix set the tone early and after an opening touchdown drive, Cumberland quickly extended the margin with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Madison Woodard to Marley Hyde, followed by another scoring connection between Woodard and CallieAnna Griggs to make it 18-0 midway through the first quarter.

Cumberland's defense played a major role in the early surge, forcing multiple turnovers that led directly to points. The Phoenix turned those takeaways into short fields throughout the first half, helping them take a 31-0 lead into the break.

The second half brought more of the same. Woodard continued to lead the offense efficiently, connecting with Je'Leah Cole for a touchdown before adding a rushing score of her own to extend the lead to 43-0 late in the third quarter.

Winston-Salem managed to get on the board in the fourth quarter, but Cumberland quickly answered with a 66-yard touchdown strike from Marley Hyde to CallieAnna Griggs to seal the 49-7 win.

Offensively, Cumberland was explosive through the air, totaling 320 passing yards and seven touchdowns. Woodard led the way, going 23-of-34 for 254 yards and six touchdowns, while Hyde added a 66-yard passing touchdown of her own.

Hyde was also a standout as a receiver, hauling in 10 catches for 116 yards and two scores, while Griggs added five receptions for 112 yards and three touchdowns, including the game's longest play. Je'Leah Cole contributed five catches for 56 yards and two touchdowns as part of the balanced attack.

On the ground, Jessica Young led the Phoenix with 70 rushing yards, helping Cumberland finish with 402 total yards of offense compared to just 192 for Winston-Salem.

Defensively, Cumberland forced six interceptions and consistently pressured the Winston-Salem offense, limiting them to just 107 passing yards and one touchdown.

Cumberland capped off a dominant day with an even more emphatic performance later in the night, shutting out Mars Hill 51-0 to complete the double on the day.

The Phoenix wasted no time asserting control, marching 66 yards on their opening drive as Madison Woodard connected with Je'Leah Cole for an early touchdown. From there, the game quickly snowballed in Cumberland's favor thanks to a relentless defense and explosive passing attack.

After another Woodard touchdown pass, this time to CallieAnna Griggs, Cumberland added points in unconventional fashion. A safety midway through the first quarter pushed the lead to 14-0, and just moments later Woodard found Marley Hyde for a 50-yard touchdown strike.

The defense then took over completely. Avery Conger jumped a pass and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown, one of two defensive scores on the night, as Cumberland built a commanding 26-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Cumberland continued to pour it on in the second quarter, adding another touchdown drive while the defense suffocated Mars Hill's offense. By halftime, the Phoenix led 45-0 and had already forced multiple turnovers that directly resulted in points.

While the offense cooled slightly in the second half, the dominance never wavered. Cumberland controlled possession and field position before capping the scoring late in the fourth quarter, as Marley Hyde connected with Grace Lamb for a touchdown to seal the 51-0 victory.

Through the air, Cumberland was once again highly efficient. Woodard finished 17-of-25 for 254 yards and five touchdowns, while Hyde added another passing score. The Phoenix totaled 285 passing yards and six touchdowns overall.

Hyde led all receivers with seven catches for 106 yards and three touchdowns, while Cole added five receptions for 89 yards and a score. Griggs and Lamb each found the end zone as part of a balanced receiving effort.

Defensively, Cumberland delivered one of its most complete performances of the season. The Phoenix held Mars Hill to just 79 total yards and forced five interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Cumberland also recorded seven sacks, consistently disrupting the Mars Hill offense from start to finish.

With the win, Cumberland improves to 6-6 on the season, finishing the day with a pair of decisive victories and showcasing dominance on both sides of the ball. Cumberland will be back at home on Wednesday, taking on the Blue Raiders in more conference action.
