LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland flag football rallied in the first half but could not hold off Lindsey Wilson, falling 27-19 on Wednesday evening. The Phoenix erased an early deficit with a strong second quarter to take the lead into halftime, but Lindsey Wilson responded with a pair of second-half scores to secure the win.
Cumberland totaled 228 yards of offense with 222 yards coming through the air. Cumberland recorded seven first downs and committed four penalties for 36 yards. Defensively, the Phoenix forced three interceptions and tallied one sack.
Madison Woodard led the Cumberland offense, completing 21-of-36 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns while also adding a rushing touchdown.
Marley Hyde was her top target with 10 receptions for 74 yards, while
CallieAnna Griggs provided the biggest plays with three catches for 67 yards and two touchdowns, including a 42-yard score late in the second quarter.
Je'Leah Cole chipped in 32 receiving yards on two catches.
Dyna'C Davis,
Ava Hourigan, and
Zora Neal each recorded five tackles to lead the defensive effort, with Neal also adding a sack. Davis and
Jada Starnes combined for three interceptions, helping swing momentum in the first half.
Brianna Taylor added four tackles, while
Macy Fowler contributed three stops.
Lindsey Wilson finished with 340 total yards, including 275 passing yards and 65 rushing yards. Defensively, Lindsey Wilson recorded 27 tackles, five tackles for loss, and two sacks while forcing a turnover.
Amaya Pablo paced the Lindsey Wilson offense, throwing for 275 yards and four touchdowns while adding 65 rushing yards. Carlee Yokley led all receivers with 90 yards and two touchdowns, including a 55-yard score, while Jenna Lindsey added 65 yards and a touchdown. Cadence Wermers contributed 55 receiving yards and a score. Defensively, Gabby Kruse led all players with eight tackles, while C. Rebarchek added two sacks.
Lindsey Wilson struck first, capitalizing on an early turnover to take a 7-0 lead midway through the opening quarter. Cumberland struggled to find rhythm offensively early, with multiple drives stalling despite a few positive plays through the air. The Blue Raiders maintained control heading into the second.
The Phoenix found their footing in the second quarter, putting together a strong offensive stretch. Cumberland tied the game before taking the lead on a 42-yard touchdown pass from Woodard to Griggs with 0:41 remaining in the half. Despite a Lindsey Wilson touchdown earlier in the quarter, the Phoenix entered halftime with a 19-13 advantage after a 19-point outburst in the quarter.
Both defenses controlled much of the third quarter, with Cumberland forcing a key turnover early. However, Lindsey Wilson eventually broke through, finding the end zone to even the score at 19-19 heading into the final period.
Lindsey Wilson regained momentum in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on a short field to score the go-ahead touchdown with just over two minutes remaining sealing the 27-19 decision.
Cumberland will be in action this weekend for a four-game set this Friday and Saturday at the Flag Frenzy hosted by Campbellsville. Cumberland will take on Wittenburg and No. 10 Life on Friday.
