Flag Football Splits in First Day of Flag Frenzy

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. --  The Phoenix competed in the first of two tri-matches on the weekend on Friday.

In this first tri-match, Cumberland would face Wittenberg University and No. 10 Life University.

The Phoenix had an early start time in the matchup against the Tigers, though that wouldn't stop the offensive attack from Cumberland. The Phoenix won the first game of the tri-match 54-0. Cumberland finished the game scoring touchdowns on their last seven drives, only missing two point after attempts in this first game.

Madison Woodard dominated on the offensive end, going 20-30 for 268 yards, adding a career high seven touchdowns. Marley Hyde was Woodard's top target, catching eight passes for 138 yards and three touchdowns. Hyde came in as the quarterback for the last drive and completed three of her four passes for 35 yards and a touchdown. Je'Leah Cole had another good game, getting four receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown. CallieAnna Griggs, Brianna Taylor, Jessica Young, and Gabby Orsi all added in receiving touchdowns for the Phoenix.

Defensively, Ava Hourigan led the way with five pulls, one tackle for loss, as well as a pass breakup. Macy Fowler had four pulls and a TFL, Josilyn Diaz got three pulls, and two of them were for a loss. Dyna'C Davis got two pulls, one pass break up, and an interception. Talyn McCaslin had one pull, one pass breakup, and two interceptions.

In game two, Cumberland held with the Running Eagles for most of the game, but execution on fourth down pushed Life ahead of the Phoenix. The No. 10 ranked Running Eagles pulled away with the game in the second half and won 25-14. Cumberland were stopped on fourth down in the red zone three times, and Life scored on fourth down in the red zone twice.

Woodard went 25-44 for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Griggs totaled 80 total yards and one touchdown. Hyde had the other touchdown for the Phoenix and amassed 73 receiving yards on six receptions.

Defensively, Jada Starnes had two pass breakups and one interception that she took for 48 yards late in the game. Diaz and Taylor pulled four flags, Kiah Seay and Hourigan got three pulls, and Candance Dedrick added a TFL for the Phoenix defense.

The Phoenix move to 7-8 as they have another Tri-Match set for tomorrow as they face off against RV Siena Heights at 7:00 AM and the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) at 11:30 AM.
