Flag Football Drops Both Games In Day Two of the Flag Frenzy

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. --  The Phoenix competed in the second of two tri-matches on the weekend on Saturday.

In the second tri-match of the weekend, Cumberland faced RV Siena Heights University and Saint Francis University (Ind.).

The Phoenix started the second day of the Flag Frenzy with a 7:00 AM start time against the Saints. That early start time seemed to put CU into a slow start, as Cumberland would lose 38-13 to Siena Heights.

Madison Woodard could not replicate the same success she had yesterday, as the freshman completed 51.7% of her passes for 191 yards, two touchdowns, and four interceptions. Trinity Ryan received one of those touchdown passes from a 66 yard play, helping to cut the lead to two scores late in the game. CallieAnna Griggs had the other touchdown, to go along with 61 receiving yards.

Defensively, Ava Hourigan and Jada Starnes led the Phoenix with five pulls, Josilyn Diaz had three pulls, one tackle for loss, and one sack. Dyna'C Davis and Avery Conger also got three pulls. In pass coverage, Kiah Seay broke up two passes, Starnes had one pass break up, and Brianna Taylor took the lone interception for the Phoenix.

In game two, the Phoenix defense kept the Cougars in check in the first half, forcing two interceptions while only allowing one scoring drive. In the second half, the offenses were able to find some rhythm. The defense was tested late in the fourth quarter, with Saint Francis having multiple goal to go situations, but Cumberland held both times and forced overtime.

In the overtime period, both teams start on the ten yard line. Saint Francis scored on the first drive, but Cumberland was stopped on the one yard line and lost 21-14.

Woodard completed 49% of her passes (24-49) for 208 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Marley Hyde was able to grab nine passes for 86 yards and a touchdown, with Ja'Leah Cole getting 66 yards on eight completions. Gabby Orsi would have the other touchdown on a four yard completion.

Defensively, Seay and Taylor were able to get eight pulls, with Taylor getting two of the four interceptions, as Starnes and Candance Dedrick had the other interceptions. Hourigan got six pulls, and Conger had five pulls.

After the weekend of games Cumberland fell to 7-10 on the season, with the Phoenix finishing their Campbellsville road trip as they play the Tigers on the road on Wednesday, April 1st at 5:00 PM.
