HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - - Cumberland women's tennis fell 6-1 to Alabama A&M on Wednesday afternoon in Huntsville, struggling to gain momentum after dropping the doubles point early.

The Phoenix were unable to secure the doubles point, falling on courts one and three. Maria Arbelaez and Elina Sungatullina were defeated 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Ana Melo Bulcao Souza and Ame Van Eijk dropped a 6-2 decision on court three. The No. 2 doubles match featuring Juanita Mendez and Valentina Mendez was left unfinished at 5-4.

In singles play, Cumberland picked up its lone point from Maria Arbelaez at No. 2. After dropping the opening set 6-3, Arbelaez responded with a dominant 6-0 second set before closing out the match with a 7-6 win in the third.

Alabama A&M controlled the remainder of singles competition to secure the team victory. Asya Tilsim Timur fell 6-1, 7-6 at No. 1 singles, while Elina Sungatullina was defeated 6-1, 6-4 on court three. Juanita Mendez dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision at No. 4, and Ame Van Eijk fell 6-0, 7-5 at No. 5. Ana Melo Bulcao Souza was also defeated in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.

Despite a strong comeback win from Arbelaez, Cumberland was unable to string together additional points as Alabama A&M claimed five of the six singles matches to close out the day.

The Phoenix will be back on the road again this weekend against another DI opponent on Saturday.
