LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland women's tennis team kicked off their conference campaign this weekend with a 5-2 triumph over Campbellsville.

Cumberland started slower in doubles, but picked up their crucial points when it came to singles action. Elina Sungatullina and Maria Arbelaez picked up a 6-3 win at the top doubles spot, though both pairings of Valentina and Juanita Mendez, as well as Madeleine Darud and Asya Tilsim Timur, fell at the next two spots by scores of 6-4.

Valentina Mendez responded well in the highest singles spot, taking down the top Tiger in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Asya Tilsim Timur took down her opponent at the next spot with the same scores in reverse, winning 6-4, 6-1.

The wins kept piling up as Maria Arbelaez won in straight sets at the three spot, 6-4, 7-5. Her doubles partner, Elina Sungatullina, also won just one spot behind her, 6-2, 6-3, while Madeleine Darud wrapped up the sixth singles point of the afternoon, winning 6-2, 6-3.

Ame Van Eijk was the only Phoenix to fall in singles, dropping the match in a battle of a third set tiebreaker, 6-2, 5-7, 5-10.

Cumberland will continue their conference play this week as they head off to Williamsburg, Kentucky to take on the No. 13 ranked Cumberlands Patriots.
