WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - - The Cumberland Phoenix women's tennis team dropped a road contest to the University of the Cumberlands on Monday afternoon, falling 6-1 in Williamsburg.

Cumberlands took control early by sweeping all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point.

The Patriots opened with a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles over the Cumberland pairing of Elina Sungatullina and Maria Arbelaez. At No. 2 doubles, Juanita Mendez and Valentina Mendez fell 6-3, while Asya Tilsim Timur and Madeleine Darud were defeated 6-1 in the No. 3 slot.

In singles play, the Patriots continued their momentum, winning five of the six matches. Cumberland's lone point came at No. 4 singles, where Elina Sungatullina earned a hard-fought three-set victory. Sungatullina took the opening set 6-2 before Haruna Kojima responded with a 6-3 second-set win. Sungatullina regrouped to secure the match and give the Phoenix their point of the day, winning a third set match tiebreak, 10-3.

Valentina Mendez dropped the No. 1 singles match 6-3, 6-1 to Marina Nagai, while Asya Tilsim Timur fell 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Maria Arbelaez battled in the first set at No. 3 singles but ultimately fell 7-5, 6-3.

Madeleine Darud fell 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5 singles, and Ame Van Eijk was defeated 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 6 position to round out the scoring.

Cumberland will look to bounce back in its next match as they will head to Pulaski to take on the UT Southern Firehawks.
