Graceland Explodes for Big Second Half to Drop Phoenix in Inaugural Home Game

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland played its home inaugural flag football game on Thursday night, but Graceland's explosive passing attack proved too much as the Yellowjackets pulled away for a 57-18 win.

Cumberland finished with 230 yards of total offense on 58 plays. The Phoenix completed 26-of-43 passes for three touchdowns, averaged 4.0 yards per play, committed one fumble and three interceptions, and were flagged eight times for 45 yards.

Madison Woodard led Cumberland through the air, going 23-for-38 for 223 yards and three touchdowns. Marley Hyde was the top target with seven catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns, while Je'Leah Cole added three receptions for 40 yards and Gabby Orsi hauled in five passes for 35 yards.

Brianna Taylor paced Cumberland with seven total tackles. Kiah Seay added four tackles and a pass breakup, Dyna'C Davis recorded three tackles with two pass breakups, and ShaNaiya Robinson came away with an interception. CallieAnna Griggs and Trinity Ryan each posted a tackle for loss.

Graceland threw for 383 passing yards, 20 rushing yards, and 403 yards of offense on 49 plays. The Yellowjackets completed 30-of-45 passes with eight touchdown throws, averaged 8.2 yards per play and were penalized just three times for 14 yards. Defensively, Graceland recorded seven sacks for 33 yards and picked off three passes.

Sierra Flores went 23-for-37 for 282 yards and seven touchdown passes while also adding 10 rushing yards and an interception. Karissa Garcia completed 7-of-8 passes for 101 yards and one touchdown. Ahmari Byrd led Graceland receivers with eight catches for 116 yards and two scores, while Delaney Mondino added five receptions for 93 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Byrd had seven tackles, and Kylie Overkamp finished with five tackles, four sacks, four tackles for loss, and an interception.

Cumberland opened its home inaugural contest with the ball, but an early sack and a pair of penalties stalled the first drive despite an 11-yard completion from Woodard to Orsi. After a punt, the Phoenix defense forced a turnover on downs, highlighted by Brianna Taylor's stop to keep Graceland off the board midway through the first quarter.

The Yellowjackets capitalized on their next opportunity. Following a Cumberland interception by Sierra Flores, Graceland marched 30 yards on a strike from Flores to Gann for the game's first touchdown with 2:41 left in the opening quarter. The conversion was good, giving Graceland a 7-0 lead.

Early in the second quarter, Cumberland answered in a big way. ShaNaiya Robinson intercepted Flores to set up the Phoenix inside their own 20, and Woodard quickly flipped momentum with a 34-yard completion to Cole. The next play, Woodard found Marley Hyde on a 22-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 7-6 after the conversion attempt failed.

Graceland responded with a methodical drive, converting a fourth down to move into Phoenix territory before the possession flipped the field. A sequence of negative plays and a turnover deep in Cumberland's own end led to Graceland extending its lead to 13-6.

Cumberland would get a score back in the second. Woodard connected with Hyde twice inside the red zone, the second a four-yard touchdown strike with 3:13 remaining in the half to trim the margin to 13-12.

The final minutes of the half swung heavily toward the Yellowjackets. Graceland drove down the field and scored twice, the second one coming from 25 yards in the closing seconds, as Flores hit Mondino for a touchdown with 11 seconds left to push the advantage to 25-12 at the break.

Graceland continued to build separation in the third quarter. Flores found Mondino again, this time on a 35-yard touchdown pass to make it 31-12. Later in the period, a short-field opportunity led to another score, as Flores connected with Makayla Brown from 10 yards out to extend the lead to 43-12 entering the fourth.

Cumberland showed resilience early in the final quarter. Woodard guided a goal-to-go drive and capped it with a 10-yard touchdown pass to CallieAnna Griggs to pull within 43-18 after the conversion attempt failed.

However, Graceland closed the door late. Karissa Garcia orchestrated the final scoring drive, setting up a three-yard touchdown run by Jaida Lammie with just over a minute remaining. The conversion was successful, sealing the 57-18 final in Cumberland's historic home debut.

Cumberland will be back in action on Saturday to host King University as well as Huntingdon.
