Flag Football’s Comeback Falls Short Against Lindsey Wilson

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The Phoenix head to Columbia for the rematch against the Blue Raiders.

To start the game, the Cumberland offense could not find much traction, as Lindsey Wilson would get three interceptions in the first quarter, and cash in with two touchdowns to take a quick two score lead.

After another fourth down stop by the Phoenix, the Blue Raiders extended their lead to 20 with a one yard run early in the second quarter. Then, with under 40 seconds left in the first half, Lindsey Wilson pushed the lead to 26 with another fourth down touchdown.

Cumberland followed that and got onto the board in 36 seconds as Madison Woodard found Marley Hyde for a 21 yard touchdown, helping to cut the lead to 19, with the score being 26-7 heading into halftime.

To open the second half, Jasilyn Diaz found her way into the backfield for her first sack of the game to push Lindsey Wilson out of the red zone and force a fourth down stop to give the ball to the Phoenix offense. However, Cumberland got stopped on fourth down on the ensuing drive right before the third quarter ended.

In the fourth quarter, the Phoenix forced a punt, which gave the offense good field position for their next drive. In that drive, Cumberland reached the red zone for the first time in the game, and got into the end zone with a 15 yard Je'Leah Cole touchdown. On the ensuing Lindsey Wilson drive, the Blue Raiders drove the length of the field and got into the endzone to bring the lead back to 20.

This was the final score of the game after one final drive by the Phoenix falling short in the red zone, with Lindsey Wilson winning 33-13.

On offense, Madison Woodard completed 23 of her 47 passes for 277 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions, while also adding seven yards on the ground. Marley Hyde had another strong performance, catching nine passes for 115 yards and one touchdown, while Je'Leah Cole added three receptions for 69 yards and one touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, Kiah Seay pulled six flags, Ava Hourigan got three pulls, Macy Fowler got three pulls. Josilyn Diaz and Candace Dedrick were able to get one sack each.

The Phoenix fell to 8-12 and will be back in Columbia, Kentucky for their final game of their inaugural season as they face off against Aurora University on Saturday April 18th at 10:00 AM.
